Okay... Kinda long overdue to clean up the music credits... Partly because we need to properly catalog what is and isn't copyrighted - but also because a lot of these music credits are just plain wrong - or lost to time and chaos.

I know, for instance, that Avoozl made at least one of our sound tracks - but I've no clue which one... I'm also probably crediting more to Thraxis than I should. Eric Barnum may be responsible for more of these than I recall. CSS also may bare responsibility for something in here.

I've categorized these based on their need to be replaced, and they appear, more or less, alphabetically within those categories.

These are all located in your %steampath%/steamapp/common/half-life/msc/music folder.

FINE:
These are unlicensed, public domain, fan produced, original works produced specifically for MSC, or packaged with permission from the author.

Gonna have to get Dridje to track it down, if that be the case... I'll move it to iffy.

I got the name wrong. Its the map with the eye of zyogli. I pretty distinctly remember Jon saying one day that some guy on the forums wrote that song for the boss battle in his map.

Actually, going back and listening to it, I'm clearly mixing it up with another song, as there's no way that's sequenced... (Think it was actually AmongTheClouds.mp3 and Reflections.mp3 I sequenced for Little-G.)

...Although it also doesn't sound up to WoW production standards either... Not sure where it came from. :\ May move to iffy.

edit: Actually, mechanically identified, and moved to "Straight Out" - seems yer right.
(The best thing about that one, is that it's been packaged with MSC at least as far back as 2009, and wasn't ever used until 2013 - save maybe in an earlier version of Nashlwhatsitz)
I need to re-do the music in the one map it was used on anyways (m2_quest) so maybe we can just delete it.

Lost Caverns, ah... That could be, will need to find out from Jon-A or Jon-B, or some such.

This was the original music used in Nashalraths first release and for years after until the dragon update. It wasn't used in any other maps though. At least not to my knowledge.

Yeah - I tossed it into m2_quest as part of the idle music earlier this year... And the music triggers in m2_quest are fubar anyways, so yeah, I'll just kill it dead and stick to the other idle music track it uses when I get around to fixing that.

And this is from his profile
IF YOU WANT TO USE MY MUSIC IN: ANY NON-PROFIT PROJECT: Go on! Credit me as Buoy where appropriate. A heads up will be appreciated.

As for dmusic, I think I just google searched that many moons ago. It's kinda irrelevant since I got rid of the disco easter egg. I'd just delete it from the installer.
...same with DesertRuins, too poor quality to use.

It appears the only map using desertruins.mp3 is a WIP map that never saw the light of day... So it can go too.

I think we just shaved about 15MB of useless bloat from the installer in these past few posts. ><

Already marked the other two songs from Nashalwhatzitz as "Straight the fuck out".

Anyone find any good songs to replace those marked for death?

Protip: Search the New Grounds Audio Archives - often you'll find someone giving stuff away, or you can PM them and ask.

Back in the day, I'd also use this PD tool - but I suspect its links are now quite dated.

If you know some music from an older Anime you like, copyright laws in Japan cause them to spool out quite quickly, and even if the anime in question has been licensed in the states, the OST's rarely are, as there's no market for them here. You can check if your anime is licensed here, though you'll have to dig deeper to be sure.

The music just needs to be in the same general tempo and theme. Same length would be nice, but I can fade-trim or fade-clone without much effort. It'd be nice if we could work out our MP3 player to be able to auto-detect the length of MP3's - as the music entity is always somewhat fubar - but I suppose that's on the epic list of coding tasks.

I have a collection of old music from a studio called '3DO' They used to make the old Might and Magic games however that studio has since gone bust and no longer exists, Ubisoft has taken up the Might and Magic name but only for the more recent Titles.

The music from DragoonCaves (dragooncaves.mp3) is from 'Might and Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven' Your free to remove it if you don't want it, but from a studio that doesn't exist anymore I don't see the harm.

Hate to see anything from the might and magic soundtracks go, but if it has to so be it.

Hrmmmm.... Hrmmmmmmmmmmmm... Damnitall. ><

Morally speaking, Ubisoft isn't selling the game nor the sound track, nor, I assume, have they incorporated said into their newer games... So, if someone doesn't use it, it's just going to waste.

Legally speaking... Ubisoft owns the damned license for it... I assume they also own it in the US, as well as in their home of France and abroad. Now, if they only licensed the franchise in France, we might be in the clear, as French copyrights expire in reasonable time, have a very narrow scope, and can't be renewed, but I'm fairly certain they've licensed the franchise world wide. So... Damnitall. ><

Thothie gave me the stash of midis to fiddle around with, AmongTheClouds.mp3 was one of the first I rendered with my orchestral software before I lost the program to dreaded viruses and couldn't recover it..

lol So was FortFraeyOrch.mp3 but it wasn't part of the midi pack, it was some midi from some random RPGMaker game. XD

I take credit for rendering the pieces but actually sequencing them... better point a finger at someone else lol

In all actuality, I was surprised they made it into the MP3 folder XD I just uploaded them as samples of what the software could do. :p

Damnit, I can't even remember which ones I rendered now. >< Although maybe I had both and just liked your render better - as I think I just ran it through pretty basic Creativelabs suite.

I'll re-label FortFraeyOrch.mp3 to unknown but keep it in "Fine". If the original was midi it's likely so old as to have expired any copyright issue. It's been used in more than one map, though I can't recall, off hand, which used it first.

I'm curious, what about SOUNDS? Like for example the bear sounds or orc sounds? I'm nearly positive some of the orc death sounds are from Morrowind...

Think I said this elsewhere, but I'm not bothering with sounds or textures (except logos), as they are regularly pirated between retail games without a second glance (including by Half-life itself).

Sound samples are notoriously hard to prosecute, so that maybe why. Pretty much has to be something universally known and universally reviled, like David Bowie's "Under Pressure" being borrowed by some dickwad like Vanilla Ice. ;)

I... Think I know this guy... I also think someone gave me a file with that very information once upon a time. ><

I'll go ask him how Stone and Mana is doing, and confirm we can use em. Moving them to "fine" meantime.

Pssssst
Need a place for good music that ya don't need to worry about (C) stuff?

http://www.audionautix.com/

I was watching ChimneySwift11 on youtube and saw he uses this site for his music source, exploring it I found some useful songs that could prove useful for anything we need to replace. Hope it helps!

The site claims that we shouldn't have to worry about the Copyright, just as long as we give credit.

Well, yer all real good at finding the sources for offending pieces - why doesn't someone spend some time browsing about on Audionautix and find us some suitable replacements? ;)

Current for-sure needs replacement list:

msc/music/d2-cav.mp3
msc/music/d2-leoric.mp3
msc/music/d2tombs.mp3

msc/music/deathborn.mp3

msc/music/hp-chess_game.mp3

dragooncaves.mp3

msc/music/insanity.mp3
msc/music/prison.mp3
msc/music/redemption.mp3

msc/music/tikal.mp3
by Two Steps from Hell (again, hard to part with, but alas...)

msc/music/Tunnels.mp3
by David Arkenstone (from Warcraft) [no need to replace, will remove - virtually unused.]

msc/music/UndeadX1Fortress.mp3
from Warcraft III - Undead Theme

Just find something you like that fits the same theme - preferably about the same length, but not required.

This is the one thing anyone can do for the mod that requires no skills whatsoever.

Eh... Drat... I'm getting 403 errors on most of these - apparently Audionautix doesn't accept hot links. I'll have to research a bit if I'm gonna dig these out.

There's a little unused Lanethan music yet, but most of his tracks are very slow cheery ambients, so I doubt we've got anything in the same genre - but I'll go over those again and double check.
