I get a LOT of PM's regarding requests for voice acting, so I've decided to create a sticky.

ATM, this just covers a few bits of voice acting we need. I'm going to expand on this as required. I may link some of the future acting "scripts" externally, in the future, to cut down on the spoilerz a bit.

I don't have sticky power in User Created Content, "Other", nor "Music/Sounds", so I'm going to put this here in mapping for now...

YOUNG'ish/GENERIC ADULT MALE VOICES

[Eh, pretty much all done now...]

MACHO MANLY VOICES

Agrath, the Gloam Slayer (islesofdread2)
Agrath is one of the elite captains of the king's guard. A veteran warrior of renown. He's rather fed up with his men, being useless for his mission to clear out this island of gloams, and is looking towards the players for an assist. The alternative being to lead them into a slaughter. He sounds old, gruff, and bitter.

Agrath is due to have more cameos at the Hall of Derlia, where the players see him first getting his mission from King Ardelleron, and another future mission, where hopefully he'll be better outfitted enough to be a true aid, rather than escort mission material.

Agrath Lines:
Code:
Intro:
"Bah! Hail there. I am known as Agrath of the Royal Guard. The King sent me here to clear this isle of gloams that we may begin logging the forest safely."
"But I never imagined there would be so many such beasts in this jungle, and this sad contigent I bought with me would be mere fodder for them."
(multiple players) "You lads look a bit more up to a battle, more so than this sad lot anyways."
(single player) "You may yet make better escort than all this sad lot combined."
"If you will serve as my escort and ferret these beasts out, you will be well rewarded for your efforts."

Player accepts mission:
"Alright, the forest beyond that barricade is completely infested with [Gloams]. Nasty work, Gloams are..."
"If we can slay all the elder, Ether Gloams, the rest shouldnt give us any trouble, and most likely will flee."
"Be ready for a good fight. Ill follow you in, but these novices will have to stay behind. No point in leading them to a slaughter."

Player refuses mission:
"Bah, coward! I suppose I could order you in the name of the king..."
"but I'd rather beat these swine into shape than have an escort who'll run at the first sign of danger!"

Player asks about gloams, before battle begins:
"I've seen all sorts of gloams: gloams of stone, of ice, and of fire. Tis why they've sent me, I suppose."
"These gloams here are the more common, tropical variety. Slimy beasts tend to show up in abandoned wetlands such as this jungle."
"They move fast, are tough, and in addition to the usual motivation of hunger, are likely also defending their nests."
"The ether gloams are the elder ones. It seems a good gloam never dies, it just fades away. Sadly, this means the creatures can turn invisible."
"While they are invisible they are neigh impossible to hit, and if they touches you while in their ethereal state, it'll give you a nasty wallup."
"The ether gloams are vulnerable to holy weapons due to their unnatural state, so if you have any, have them at the ready..."
"But beware that the same does not apply to the younger ones. For, as the wizards tell me, they are beastly, but still of this world."
"Beyond that all I can say is keep a sharp eye and a steady hand, and ye may yet survive with all your limbs uneaten."

Player asks about gloams, after battle begins:
(angry, panting) "Oh NOW you want to hear about the gloams!? A bit busy at the moment! You'll learn anything I could have taught you the hard way soon enough!

Battle over, menu activated:
"Thanks again for your assistance."

Battle over, Agrath has reward to give:
"Thank you for your fine aid in battle! Please select a reward, courtesy of the king..."

Player refuses reward:
(impressed) "I see. A noble warrior for whom the battle is reward enough. Good show."

Player asks for rewards after all items dished out:
"Sorry, I've nothing left to offer."

Takes spell damage from player:
(angry) "Watch where you cast those things!"
(angry) "Check your targets!"

Takes melee damage from player:
(angry) "Careful where you swing that!"
(angry) "Watch your targets!"

As explained elsewhere, sound files need to be divided up line-by-line (ie. by carriage return), down-sampled to 20.05Khz, and EXTREMELY LOUD. Final product should be 16-bit unsigned wave files. To avoid noise from over-volume, you may wish to initially record at a fairly low volume, at the highest sampling rate possible, then use a wave editor, such as Gold Wave to boost the volume and change the sampling rate afterwards. We can filter noise, to a degree, but we have our limits - if yer recording is far too dirty, ya maybe SOL.

You can fiddle with the lines and adlib as you wish, so long as you get the same message across in about the same time, although no promises that I'll remember to update the text accordingly

The finest examples of amature voice work you can find in game are in:
msc\sound\voices\the_wall

You can replace these voice files, and go to The_Wall to get an idea of what your own wav files are going to sound like in game.

===

I don't have time to parse this out, although I stripped it quite a bit, but here...
http://www.thothie.com/msc_dev3/speech_find.txt
...is every line of text spoken by just about every NPC ever. (Also, warning: mass spoilers)

So, if you have a particular NPC in mind, you can search any text he says in here.

With the post read I must ask this:

Who did the voice acting on Lodagond-1? The Ice Mages and Runeghar. That is, hands down, the best voice acting in game.

Those are actually semi-professional. Done by Poof and Bshaman, of Sycho Fan Dubs, as stated in the credits.

Poof keeps telling me he's going to do Runeghar's other lines (sorc_villa/shad_palace), but I've still yet to get them.

Poof also did Finven's voice in Sorc_Villa. (And the related archer lines)

I always get a snigger from the way he delivered the "...at least the only one without tusks." line in \msc\sound\voices\sorc_villa\finven_hail1.wav ;)

I also like how Slinker in msc\sound\voices\deralia sounds like every other stoner I've ever known, thanks to SquaresoftKnight. :)

Added Agrath and categorized; will add more as I get around to it.

Crow has started on Findlebind Goodheart- I'll remove him when I have the final wave set.

He... eh... Purchased them... Along with himself... At a discount warrior warehouse... Yeah, that's it... >_>

You can fiddle with the lines as you wish, so long as you get the same message across in about the same time, although no promises that I'll remember to update the text accordingly (see The_wall). :|

Reminds me, however, I really need to expand on this... Maybe I should make some sort of speech text diver to automate the process and just get all the scripts at once.

I'd be more than willing to do voice acting for an adventurer of young age. I also have a Logitech G35 headset, so not only does my voice come out very well quality, I may also be able to do different rolls such as those of a troll or giant. (G35 has built in voice morphing.) :D

Is voice acting still needed? If so what needs to be done? The other question I have would be what file type should I send them in? I know what the final type will be, but what would be best to send them in? http://www.youtube.com/user/Sielmaniel is my youtube channel if you need examples of my voice.

Yes... Lots...

From the Youtube clip, I'd be guessing you're better suited for the younger voices, although I don't know what your range is.

The link above contains a complete, though non-descriptive list:
http://www.thothie.com/msc_dev3/speech_find.txt

I think Crow gave up on Findlebind Goodheart, if you wanna do a whiney elf voice. So everything listed at the top page is still open, I guess. There's a new Bandit Ralion I've not put up there, although there's still a chance that we may get a semi-professional on that one.

As for format, as the top post describes:
sound files need to be divided up line-by-line (ie. by carriage return), down-sampled to 20.05Khz, and EXTREMELY LOUD. Final product should be 16-bit unsigned wave files. To avoid noise from over-volume, you may wish to initially record at a fairly low volume, then use a wave editor, such as Gold Wave to boost the volume afterwards. We can filter noise, to a degree, but we have our limits - if yer recording is far too dirty, ya maybe SOL.
But, if you don't think you're cleaning filters are all that great, it'd be best to provide us with the highest sampled mono-MP3 that your sound system can handle (usually from 44khz to 96khz) and we'll see what we can do from there.

I'm not even going to pretend I am amazing at this or anything, but I gave it a shot for a few test voices. I can hear a few things I would probably change if you want me to do them, but mostly wanted an early opinion on what you think of the quality/voices. I'm welcoming any feedback even if it's to tell me I'm terrible and should never try again.

Findlebind Test
Jerdid Test
Vadrel Test

If I have some idea of how you want them to sound I can try to improve it. These are just a few I tried, I'm still practicing and if I warm up a bit more I'll try some other voices.

I would cut down on the "cute nerd nasal" a bit... I dunno if we have a young dwarf or goblin who could use that - although it might not be too terrible for any one of them, but on all three it's a bit much. Also probably a nasally voice better fit villains and scoundrels though. Other than that, it seems good - fairly clean - doesn't hiss too much either.

Well, it's been valid since October, and I've yet to get anything from you... So... I refer you to our once future vice president for sage advice.

Here are a few more samples. I get kind of nasaly when I do voices for some reason just like I always seem to work in an english accent if I'm not careful. I did 4 more but I've been up all night and have to go to work later so I'm going to bed. These are just some samples. I read the same line for them just to get a decent comparison although 1 and 2 are almost identical going back and listening to them. Just let me know if there is a specific sound you are trying to get and I will try to see what I can do.

Well I'm currently deathly ill, but this summer when I have time I should be able to do a few recordings. :)

You should do some monster voices while you still have frogs in your throat.

Damn these forums... Satan distracted me and I almost missed that one... But had to wait an hour to fix it...

But yeah... #4 is probably the closest to the right track. Dunno if anyone else has any opinions. If you can do a British accent, it wouldn't be a bad idea for the Foutpost Super - maybe not terrible for Findlebind either. That snively voice would be just about perfect for the Helena banker, if you could toss some fear into it.

Alright well my accent is far from impressive but I gave it a quick shot before work. I was thinking maybe something like this for the supervisor. I will update it if I improve it later on, but this is about what I thought it would be like. I'll try the banker in a few hours when I get off.

Super
