I notice when playing MS, that my character really doesn't have much uniqueness compared to the people I play with. I think this is because the option to become your own class is not featured. As I ahve heard, the developers are trying to avoid becoming a class because they want the players character to develop as the story unfolds.

To me, I am able to do this while I choose an area to show my interest. That why I think not adding one of the most brilliant option in RPGs today is a mistake. It give a reason to level up in a certain area, while getting bonuses that are not featured with others, while add personality to your character.

In this thread you can share your thoughts on classes. Thats really about it.

I dont really agree. Yeah you can be your own "class" but that's not what sets you apart from everybody. ITs the way you are with your character.. so waht if the others are just as strong as you. You also have to remember, there are what? 8 or so different areas of training. Become unique by how you advance those stats, rather than your free personal class bonuses.

While I like the play it and gain skill aspect. I at least think that your choice at the beginning should have some impact. (+25% on a certain skill) So that anyone can do everything still, but make it easier to become a certain class to encourage teamwork with multiple people. (EX. Mages, Tanks, etc.)

whichever weapon you prefer, you would often use the most and gain the most exp, thus defining ur class

I'm biased, as in almost every RPG I go for the jack-of-all trades sort of character, and this is probably the only RPG that encourages that, rather than laying the smack down on you for it. (Multi-classing in D&D can be t3h suck sometimes).

Further, to a degree, there are classes... They come in about a dozen titles, but I tend to surmise them in four types:

Archer: Your bow guys don't have much health, hit harder with their bows, run around hella fast, and tend not to have any armor - since they just tend to stand back and shoot over their buddy's heads.

Magi: These days mages tend to be like archers - although under the current system it's neigh impossible to be a pure mage - you still see a lot of people trying to be 'mostly' pure mages, with stats and behavior similar to the Archer classes. Eventually the mage can buff his buddies - which makes him much more popular among them than the archer.

Dagger Boi: This is the MSC Thief Class... Since there are no locks to pick nor traps to disarm (and you really don't want to have the pick pocket feature, less its PVP only). He has more HP than the Archer or the purer Magi, but still not a whole lot. His thing is that he hits hard and fast and is good at juicing up monsters in a hurry for the other three to finish off.

Melee Meatbag: Axe/Hammer specialist (usually with some sword on the side). The guy who goes toe to toe with the big mon while everyone else just feels his pain by proxy and PL's off him. (MSC has to be the only RPG where multi-classers make good meat bags)

This... in the end, isn't really that bad, because if you take any RPG and boil it down, these are the same categories of classes you inevitably wind up with. I suppose most RPG's have an Assist class or Summoner class (buff boy/cleric - as opposed to the MSC Magi who must wait to very high level before he can do anysuch), and some have Crafter classes (Enchanters, etc). But for the features available, really, we have every class every other RPG has within MSC. Changeing the XP system isn't going to give you any more classes - you'd have to add whole new features.

In the end, I suppose, the MSC system is more realistic than most RPGs - as it works like Real Life: Your career is based on the tools you train in, you grow into it, and the world is the School of Hard Knocks.

I think that we simply need to refine the current system to encourage specialization.

What I dislike from the current XP system, is that it's too easy to be everything. I mean training magic (for example) in the beginning and getting our little 5HP a$$ kicked by boars is harder but when you have 200 HP, you can train in whatever you want! You can just stand there with any LV1 fire dart, hitting for 1, but those boars you train on will never beat you while you're leveling up. There sure should be some restrictions. Or as Thothie said would be really ideal. But that may be hard to do.

*sigh* this thread about being able to specialize in everything reminds me of Red Mage from 8-bit Theatre

if you've never heard of it, think of a D&D crazed Red Mage in a spoofed Final Fantasy 1 universe with a sword-obsessed and stooopid fighter travelling with an egotistical and evil moreorless black mage
and the Red Mage constantly erases his "character sheet" and redistributes his stats for any situation thinking it will make him invincible and all powerful in all ranges of this character

bwah, but im sure you all know that(probably better than i)
