I am considering buying the new OS Windows Vista but dual booting Windows XP.As of right now I know nothing about dual booting. Is it possible to run XP and Vista on the same computer? If it is how does it work? On startup do you just pick the OS you wish to start?
If someone could briefly explain me about Dual OS booting that would be spectacular!

Windows Vista
UPS
Direct X 10
Direct X 10 GAMES
Top of the line theme

DOWNS
Processor and memory it takes up
Cannot play Direct X 9 Games (I heard there making DX 9.L for Vista?)

Thanks

If you know nothing about vista and just hate it without a reason please do not comment!

Well I dont use Vista but there should not be a problem to have Vista and XP with dual boot. Im running Xp and a linux os btw.

All u have to doo is;
1. Install windows XP
2. Install Vista on another partition or HD

When its all installed in separatly partitions the computer will find that there are more then one system on the harddrive/harddrives and then a screen where u can choose wich OS u want to boot with will appear.

Its easy

or use vmware. I am using vmware for my vista. There are alot of programs that I can not run with vista. It looks nice but it is a pain in the ass.

I say no, Steam deos not support Vista, and Vista is extremely buggy right now.

These are the DirectX 9.0 games I have tried on Vista. Green games work and red games don't work.

Armed Assault demo
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (non-Steam)
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Half-Life: Uplink (non-Steam)
Half-Life 2: Episode One (non-Steam)
Quake 4
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
TrackMania: Nations
X3: Reunion

And to answer your question: I think you should steal (read: pirate) it, just like you steal maps.

Anyone who pays for Vista is dead to me. Just encouraging Micro$oft and making a bad problem, even worse.

I acknowledge that there may eventually be a need to pirate it in the future though, for compatibility with DX10 games or whatnot. ATM, however, there's simply no reason to have the thing. (Only reason I have it, is I get paid double to diagnose problems with it, and I do not have it at all on my primary system.)

everything people have been saying is true about vista.

It can play Direct X 9 games, although its emulated so better to have XP for Direct X 9
Vista will have support for Direct X 10 = about only advantage

Vista eats about 430 MB of ram at idle, eating nearly 1 gig during startup.

very CPU intensive, Vista gave me a rating of 4.0 out of 10 on my CPU...

is it worth buying, no its not. If you land a free copy then good for you, besides that its not worth it until you know you have a system that can handle Direct X 10 games.

as for dual booting, its not hard. Just install vista on a blank extra HDD, I find it safer than splitting my primary HDD, that way if the boot loader gets shot in vista, I can still load my XP.

Just keep in mind XP installs first, than Vista.

I bought Vista from my school a few weeks ago for $10. Like some other Microsoft stuff I bought from them, I haven't even used it yet. I'm just stockpiling before I graduate while I have the chance to buy cheap software from them. Anyway, from what I've heard from friends/old co-workers at the computer store/repair shop I used to work at, it's not worth installing until service pack 1 comes out for it. But, if you can get it for cheap, I recommend buying it. :)
