For reference, this problem, known as THE BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH, is related to having a firewall. Basicly, Master Sword uses ports 2200/2400 to transmit player information from client to server. If these ports are not opened by the server administrator than the client will be unable to upload thier character and get a black loading screen, along with the message "Retry character data connect....".
The logical fix hasn't work in this case, but then again, there shouldn't be a firewall between you and yourself.
Hmmm... In Edana, can create new character, but gets the black screen of death on own server via 'retry character data connect '... This is a listen server via "Establish a Kingdom", I presume. Only other thing I could think to do, if you've tried everything in page one and page three of the above thread, is to create a dedicated server on 27016 (it's not hard to make the GUI based DS), and try to connect to that.
Might also wanna make sure nothing in your MS folder is set to Read-Only - this messed up one of my clients and undoing it cured him. *shrug*
What ISP are you using? And what sort of setup? (Router, direct connect?) Many routers and gateways get really funky (particularly some provided by SBC/Verizon out here). You might just have to bypass them and direct connect.
Feh, I swear, half the people I talk to on my server can't create their own for one reason or another. I wish there was some way to make MS start single player without accessing the network at all... >< DAMN YOU STEAM!!!
Steam won't even let you play single-player Half-life without trying to access the internet these days... It *used* to be, back in the days of Won, that I could type "map edana" in console, and it would go straight there, without touching the internet. Now I can't even do that, without all the same limitations as I mentioned in page3 of the 'how to make a working server' thread. Like so many other acts of vile stupidity, I blame it upon Steam.
That and international terrorism - I blame this on Steam too.

Well, the firewall says its accessing the net, and it wont work with any of the net-programs I mentioned running. So if it ain't accessing the net, it's doing a damn good job of fooling everything else on my computer into thinking it is, and refusing to work, because other programs on the computer ARE accessing the net. Unlike WonID, which let me play a true single player game of Magic Sword, wholey off-line. No networking issues, period.
Suffice to say, nothing in my entire, what is it now... Six+ years of playing Half-life? Has fugged up the game as much as Steam has.

Maybe, if were thinking you'd relize there are two modes Steam runs in. One, where it accesses the net to make sure everything is up to date (a crazy idea, making sure people aren't running old versions) and another one where Steam does not need to get on the internet. Maybe you should run in that mode, make everything a little easier.
Where would this "mode switch" be, mr. Steam Guru? If it works, it would solve a hell of a lot of problems with Master Sword.

An easy way to turn it on would be to unplug your network cord while starting Steam. Another would be to press cancel when Steam is authorizing your account.
Hmmm... Well, clicking cancel while steam is logging on, just makes Steam not load - which means I can't play any Steam games without logging on.
I'll get back to you on unplugging my network, which is not an option at this moment... But I recall trying that once before, and finding that the game wouldn't launch.
edit: Nice try... The offline mode is still there, but it crashes to desktop on Establish a Kingdom launch. It seems it's still *trying* to use the network, or the same memory area the network was using... It maybe then I still need to clear the programs that were interfering with it before, which would mean a clean boot though. (Although this seems unlikely, as I can close my HLDS servers and 'Establish a Kingdom' just fine in on-line mode). I'll shall have to experiment later.

Edit res files for SP? Wtf you talkin about Willis?
Well, I tried "Establish a Kingdom" and I tried "map edana" in console, beyond this, I've don't know of another way of starting a SP game of MS. Both crash it when logged in off-line mode.
It's very odd that it works fine if I kill the HLDS's I've running and start it in on-line mode. But if I disable my network, and kill the HLDS's, and do the same thing, then it crashes. Seems most likely that Steam's just too stupid to stop attempting to access the network. (or MS doesn't recognize the off-line mode)
Again, I'll try a restart sometime, see if it works that way and it's something the HLDS leaves in memory, just can't atm.
