I've been playing this mod for Quake 2. Not a huge community though, so I'm trying to spread the word. I figured there must be a lot of coop fans in the MS community so I'm giving you guys a heads up. It features central server invetory and stat tracking and a host of cool features, plus kudos and status for those who can complete the entire ID compaign without dying. Hoo-Ha! I'll see you around.

But... Quake2 already had a co-op mode... Indeed, I think it was more or less the last FPS to have one built in - before they realized the best way to meet release dates was to skimp out on co-op modes and depend on the modding community to make them. :(

Oh yeah I know, I set up a 5 man LAN at school and we loved it coop, it's just this mods added a bunch of funky features that make it great, like randomly boosting the number and type of bad guys spawned to make it tougher, permenant bodies, so as you walk about you can see which other players died on the map, where and who killed them (even on a different server) If anyone dies, you have to restart the mission and it shows the direction and distance of your teammates so you don't get lost. It's really sweet and supports a bunch of enhanced Q2 engines. I discovered it when I broguth out Q2 for kicks. The 'do it with on life' challenge mode has me hooked.

Nice work with MS:C btw.

*EDIT* typos!

Quake has a horrible singleplayer system, all Quake games do... Doom & Half-Life are the awesome FPS games with awesome Singleplayer setups (in the sense of HAVING one with a PLOT)... Quake's simple find'em & kill'em "campaign/story" is disgusting when it calls itself a singleplayer game -_-

Albeit... I might not remember Quake 2 very well, since I haven't played it since like 2002 when there was a computer setup in my mom's basement with the game on it.... and I wanted to see how stable the computer was (since it was still on windows 95)... I saw in '02 that the Windows 95 is STILL extremely stable (compared to XP), even if the computer using it is like six or so years old.

If you ask me the only decent Quake game is Quake1, it had a trilling atmosphere and environment and it was fun!

Quake2 was a completely boring different story that totally fails.

I played the Quake II demo years ago and I was absolutely amazed. It probably is the first 3D FPS I have played. I played the demo over and over and over because it was so damn fun! And gorish, too (compared to stuff like Commander Keen).

I never played the original or Quake III, but I did play Quake 4. And man, Quake 4 is awesome. It's one of the best shooters I have ever played. You're totally immersed in the Humans versus Strogg war because there is constantly stuff going on around you (fighters flying over, shooting at each other, things blowing up). I would recommend Quake 4 to just about every FPS lover.

/me wipes himself off. That was a bit OTT.

Anyhoo, personally I enjoyed Q1 + 2. Both game were light on story but strong on atmosphere. And both stories allow players to just jump into a map and frag each other or the monsters. A lot like Total Annihilation come to think of it....light on story (an endless war between two robotic armies mindlessly smashing each other up), but a story ideally suited to the game where players fight endless multiplayer matches and skirmishes. I'd love to see more co-op games with imirsive plots, but something of the nature of multiplayer tends to break story imirsion. I always thought of Q1,2,3 as attempts to create a more 'pure' abstract AR enviroment, rather than, say, Half-Life which attempts to creating a fantasy world...
But I'm rambling....and I don't want to turn this thread into a Quake sucks/ Quake doesn't suck fight.

I miss quake1...the real quake ...
immagine how chton would be in a modern day engine...
or all thoose dark evil, techno-medieval places...

quake2 was too technological...and the old story was completely thrashed...damn disappointing.

not to talk about quake3...that should even be part of the triology...its just a deathmatch with bots.

I agree with that... Old FPS were more fun than all those realistic shooters they make nowadays in wich you always have to give orders to some squad or having a ton of ppl always following you everywhere. I think they should remake or create more games like Blood/Blood2, Doom2 (didn't like doom 3, boring). I miss those old cheap (but fun) concepts for FPS...

Not all modern shooters are like that. I played and completed the following games (none of them are really old) and I greatly enjoyed all of them:
- Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes
- F.E.A.R.
- Far Cry
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2: Episode One
- Painkiller
- Painkiller: Battle out of Hell
- Postal 2: Share The Pain
- Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend
- Prey
- Quake 4
- Serious Sam II
- TRON 2.0

to bad i dont have quake 2

you can get a partially working quake2 by downloading the demo and patching it with the lastest non ctf patch.

all you go to do then is having someone...normally a friend who owns quake2 to send you all bsp map files, the rest will dl when you play online...

Hmmm... My old Quake2 works as is, without any patching.

Quake1 - Best single player emersion. Trent Reznor soundtrack, also a nice plus. Multiplayer Quake1, however, sux ballz.

Quake2 - Best multiplayer with tons of nutty mods. Single player was always terminally boring for me though. Lead us to the Half-Life engine (originally a Hybrid of the Quake1 and Quake2 engines).

Quake3 - What single player? Arena with bots don't count in my book. Excellent flash to performance ratio from the graphics engine lent its power to many other games for years afterwards. The net system sucked for a game of its era (last of the non-zero ping physics shooters), but most of the games that built on the engine dropped it. (Return to Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, etc. etc.)

Quake4 - Ain't seen it yet. ;)

Seems with Quake and Doom, lately, it's more about the engine they release than the game themselves. Suspect ID software makes more money licensing its engine than it does off selling games.

I still say I prefer the game-play of Doom2 to Doom3. Seems to me PC games are less about innovation, and more about selling more expensive hardware for prettier pictures these days. Pretty much everything you see has been tried and tested to death and not new in anyway, save for the version of DirectX it requires.

Wow, I used to play this mod a long time ago, and I loved it. It would be cool if we could build it's community up again. I found my old Quake 2 CD, so I could probably join you.

I still play DooM1+2 now and again, using the ZDooMGL engine. It just adds high rez, and mouse control and stuff. A true classic is always fun.

Mouse control...? On something that came out before Quake III? I thought only simulator games (Like Janes Longbow II) had that!? Well, that sounds nice... I may reinstall Quake 2 just to try that out :p

LOL You mean mouselook? You kids gotta learn your history! DooM actually had mouse control, but no Y axis if I remember, so it sucked but if you could get your head around it, you owned in deathmatch. And Quake 1 of course had it, but I remember you had to put +mlook into the console to activate it, it wasn't in the standard setup for some bizzare reason.

You could play Wolfenstein 3D with the mouse too, and that was a few years before DOOM 1.

Mind you, I'm talking this Wolfenstein:
linuxwolf.gif

For those who maybe too young to remember it. ;)

Hell, my TSR-80 CoCo supported mouse games back in the 80's... Granted, the joystick was analog, and the mouse plugged into the joystick port - and thus, any joystick game was automagically a mouse game. ;)

...and yeah, the mouse DOMINATED in Doom deathmatch, cuz you could slide around at near infinite speed. My ex started kicking my ass when she figured that out.

In DooM it was the fact that moving the mouse up and down made you move forward and back it took me a while gettting used to it. I remember finding mouselook in Quake hard for the first hour or so, I practiced singleplayer for a bit then went on DM. I was the only person on our LAN using mouselook, and I had such an advantage it was unfunny....they would be spamming me with rockets and I'd just pull out the crappy shotgun and take em down, casually sidestepping the crudely aimed incoming fire. After that, they all took the time to master mouselook. :D

History repeated itself when PC gamers got to play XboX players at Q3....mouse+keyboard good, gamepad ungood......

The best multiplayer, and co-op mod for Q2 was Vortex, version 1.72-1.94 abouts. Me and my lan friends went through about 8 versions of it before finding the one we origionally played and liked best. It's completely bastardized now, but if you can ever get a hold of an early version, it's a great rpg mod with distinct classes and gameplay. You could be a cloaking vampire, bomb trailing mage, flying paladin, all with the wonderful quake weapons. You could even upgrade the weps themselves with things like fire damage, faster refire, tracer bullets and the like.

Will no one play with me? Zalnars a good soldier, but I keep missing everyone else cos the community is so small. I need someone detertimed (crazy?) enough to complete challenge mode with.

Oh and Zalnar buddy, did you download the Stench series? It makes a good break when a stupid death in the main campaign strips you of the will to live :D
