Yeeah... The Dear Esther remake is kinda up in the air right now, sadly. It involves a lot of custom shaders, but other than that, it's just a very clever Source mapper (who sadly, has already refused to join MSS). It's a single player build - but you could tweak it out so the grass was entirely client side and it wouldn't add much net overhead - still a bit rough on the average client for combat though (coop or otherwise). There be no combat in Dear Esther, so visuals are more or less everything there.

The Chinese Room isn't really supporting this project, save in spirit, but everything they (or more accurately, at this point, he) could do for it has already been done. It's pretty much up to this one mapper, and he's kinda gone AWOL on us. There are four maps to remake, so he may have bit off more than he could chew with this level of detail.

I've a partial source for one map around here... I need to ask before I dish it out as an Source tutorial map though.

Dear Esther is one of the mods still on my to-play list (along with Research & Development) but I never knew it was being remade already. It's not all that old, right?
Screenshots look great though.

I know. Thanks anyway.
Dear Esther
Research & Development

Edit: Hrm, the link to the original version of Dear Esther is gone on ModDB...

Edit: Holy ****, I only just noticed that Robert Briscoe (dm_depot author) is remaking this O_O
No wonder it looks this good.

You'd actually release a map from some other mod as MS:S tutorial map, if given permission?
Wow.
And here I was, thinking MS:S would move away from the "let's borrow everything from other mods" methodology.

I think they did. I was thinking of passing it out as a general tutorial for Source mappers, rather than for use as material, as it involves a lot of tricks. Just never got around to asking last I talked to him though. Gotta e-mail. :\ (Couldn't really use it as an MSS map anyways, in addition to the 20th century artifacts laying about, it's a little *too* wide open - monsters couldn't navigate all this even with good nodes - unless they were all flyers, or something.)

Eh.... WTF did Dan do the to the Dear Esther Moddb page? :\ Meh... I think he jumped the gun back when he had confidence that Briscoe wouldn't lose interest. Jeeze... I'll see about fixing it...

You can still download the original Dear Esther here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/196430/190000 ... r-Mod-v1.1

I should warn, however, it is a very avant-garde piece of work. It isn't a game, per-say, more of a semi-interactive story with a load of ambience. Probably best experienced when you've not slept in ages late one night, or are under the influence of the same herbs that at least half our board members seem to be a great deal of the time. ;) Definitely not the mod when yer in the mood to shoot things though.

You also have to have an appreciation for tragic, romantic, and psychotically philosophical type things... Maybe some background in electronic engineering wouldn't hurt either. ;)

I don't think he's losing interest at this point, imo. He already has a lot of content done and having this level of detail on the Source engine takes quite a bit of time to achieve. He did say he was refining his technique as progress moved along though.

And it's not hard to believe that it's Source, the guy is just a professional and knows how to utilize the engine.

He's a "Professional" when he's getting paid. Sadly, the rest of the time, he's merely an "Artist". He's abandoned several projects before (notably "The Willows", amongst others). We've not heard from him in nearly three months. I've not pestered him much, but I know Dan has. I'm not aware of any other projects he's on ATM.

Sadly, he wasn't around when Dan was *supposedly* getting money for creating Dear Esther from a Portsmouth University grant for "experimental gaming design", or he coulda enticed him with said cash.

Dear Esther deserves cash though - sadly that was done before I found him, so I had no hand in it. Supposedly he got some cash for Korsakovia, where I did some minor assist, and well... He shouldn't have... (Watching that concept turn into killing black clouds with a crowbar was such a disappointment.) :(

Eh... Go play it... It isn't one of those trippy LSD music games. This is more of a structured romantic tragedy about a man wandering through his own purgatory in search of self with some horror-suspense overtones. Not quite the same genre.

Although if you want a trippy LSD music source mod, I suggest:
The Great Forever Tomorrow
Which is actually a sh*t mod that'll give you a horrible headache - but none the less fun. ;)

To set the mood? Show a bunch of flashy colors with dower depressing music and the acid trippers lose interest. ;)

Lol yeah (I did look it up)... Much closer to Great Forever Tomorrow than Dear Esther... Save that GFT has combat.

Wow not only does that game not look all that pretty at all, it also looks incredibly lame and boring.

Yeah yeah... but we all know JM's hates like 9 in every 10 games shown to him, so your opinion about games is basically negative all the time. Game seems to be similiar, or based of God of war and some others i played in the past by the looks of it, it also looks kinda nice and too easy aswell.

Is it free?

Yes. From what i seen when i searched.

moddb's profile said:
Vindictus (Korean: 마비노기 영웅전, Mabinogi Heroes) is a free-to-play hack and slash massive multiplayer online role-playing game created by devCAT, an internal studio of Korean free-to-play game publisher Nexon. Vindictus is a prequel to the popular MMORPG Mabinogi and is known as Mabinogi Heroes outside of North America and Europe. Vindictus takes place in the same setting used in Mabinogi, but is placed chronologically several hundred years prior to the first game during a period of war and strife. Nexon America, Nexon's North American division, announced the new name on March 12, 2010 at the Game Developers' Conference in San Francisco
