YouTube.com said:
Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest flash player.
Whenever I go to YouTube, I get this error message.

The last time YouTube worked, was a few hours ago. In the meantime, I updated some programs on my PC:
- Windows Media Player
- WinAMP
- VLC media player
- QuickTime
- iTunes
- SpeedFan
- ZoneAlarm Pro

I know that I do have the latest flash player installed, because when I follow the link (http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer/) YouTube gives me, I see a flash movie that says I have the latest flash player installed.

So how do I enable JavaScript? Or can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

sounds like your internet explorer property won't allow you to enable it.. you have to enable it in internet explorer settings.

I did a Google search on how to enable JavaScript, and in IE7, you must go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom level... -> Scripting -> Active scripting -> Enable and when I got to that menu, it already said "Enable". I even tried disabling and re-enabling, but YouTube still gives me the finger :(

SOMETHING HAPOPENED 2 MAI INTERNETS

Try Firefox. Although I dislike firefox, for some reason all the videos that don't work on IE, works on Firefox. (for me atless)

I don't think you have it installed properly. or you must have another application overlap the video application like quick time, media player, or dvx, If you have a DVX or ANYDVD software then that is the problem. Just go to the application and unclick them from being "Default" or "Primary" application.

My information.
Why do you dislike firefox :oldshock:

I mean, they had such kickass features; that IE7 actually had to copy a bunch (the multi-browser opening without actually opening a bunch of them)...

Are there any more suggetions? I tried Internet Explorer 6, but that didn't work, I tried going back to WMP 10, but that didn't work, I tried removing VLC, but that didn't work.

This crap is annoying.

I suggest (again) to download firefox. You can use IE as your default (Which I do) and firefox for whatever doesn't work. A friend got me to download it, I still hate firefox but I ocassionally use it for YTMND and broken videos. I don't care if the multi-browser feature was stolen, its extremely useful. I find most (not all) of firefox's features rather useless and/or in the way.

I love firefox, and for an operating system to flee to, once WinXP fails, I am going to use http://www.ubuntu.com/ most likely... and I will get the Windows Emulator that linux O/S's use to use anything that windows can :p

only thing I could say for you is to uninstall it and reinstall and hope for the best, another trick is to uninstall the flash player and reinstall it. Of course you could try getting the latest version of Java as well, it shouldn't matter but worth a shot.

hmm oh and one more thing scanning the computer for viruses and other evil programs could prove helpful.

oh and Ubuntu = I are linux N00B

Given the error, I would make sure that YouTube is in a low-security zone, but it sounds like you went over that.

If flash player is also broken on other sites, this is likely your issue:
- Windows Media Player
- WinAMP
- VLC media player
- QuickTime
- iTunes
It is likely one of those programs changed your association/net handling of the SWF/FLV format youtube likes to use. Windows Media Player 9+ and Quicktime / iTunes are particularly problematic bits of "legit" spyware / Trojans that love to do this sort of thing. (You cannot fully remove Win Media Player 9+ once installed - it integrates with DirectX.)

Uninstalling them likely will not work, but will be at least one step in the fix. If you are lucky, you can break open your file associations (any explorer file browser window, Tools->Folder Options->[File Types]) and restore your associations for SWF/FLV (restore to default - not always an option). This may not fix the MIME settings however, so ye may still be screwed.

Re-installing the Flash Player, unfortunately, also usually does not repair the MIME settings either, as it refuses to override changes when it installs. Quicktime restores its MIME settings every time it starts (and every time windows starts, since it is resident), so you'll have to at least uninstall that first.

As a last resort, after removing Quicktime, you can try Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components. If yer lucky ye old Flash Player will be in there. If you remove it, then re-add it, it should restore your proper settings.

If all that fails, you are down to system restore, registry edits, and windows re-install.

Do not download Quicktime, iTunes, Real Player, or Windows Media Player 9+. They are all "legit Trojans" meaning that they will not detect as such by spyware programs, as they are mainstream progs that make this clear in their EULA's. You, essentially, grant any media distributor contracted with Apple/Microsoft, permission to scan and delete contraband from your computer by installing these (as well as anyone who writes up a good hack to exploit the back door these provide - of which there are many). Further they are resource hogs that stay resident (more true of Quicktime than Media Player), and are not blocked by default by most firewalls, as they are considered integral applications (more true of Media Player than Quicktime).

Alternate Quicktime Player Codec, without the Trojan and resident crap:
Quicktime Alternative

Alternate Real Player, without the Trojan and resident crap:
Real Alternative

Alternate, better, replacement for Windows Media Player (no WDRM decode though - but that's part of the problem):
Media Player Classic (Included with either of the two proggies above)

I came accross an issue similar to J-M's when assembling some non-internet'able laptops yesterday, thought this link to the direct flash installer might help him out:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/fl ... tive_x.msi

Should replace the ActiveX that handles flash playing without checking if it already exists, may reset whatever you did in the process. Maybe, perhaps, possibly even.

Wow, holy shit, it instantly worked - I didn't even have to restart my PC, as a matter of fact, I didn't even have to restart (close & open) Internet Explorer! I just installed it and BAM YouTube works again!

Thothie, you are awesome!
