I think that's a map-by-map setting (like on Thornlands, it's fairly restrictive, but on Foutpost, you can see pretty much infinitely.)
There maybe a way to override it via cvars, but I'm not sure if you can do so in multiplayer mode (ie. the only mode MSC runs in, even if you are playing alone.)
I think thats Valve's way of telling us not to make big open areas
I noticed the same thing in a map I'm working on. Theres a way to set the render distance for objects/models in hammer (For when you are working) but I don't know about a similar option actually ingame..
there's an otion in hammer to set the max view distance - but it only works for the host of a listenserver - everybody else sees at the default max view dist.
