When i look at the servers latency from the steam window, they all dont lag, but when i launch MS:C my ping goes up to 1000, but only when i launch the game.
Any idea or is it just my crappy internet server?

This all HL mods, or just MSC? If just MSC, does lag start before or after you load your char?

If it's all HL mods, I don't have much advice to give beyond some cvars you can look into and the usual windows Haiku.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

My information.
Also, just for good measure, defrag your harddrive (again if you already did), run HiJackThis and clean up anything that looks suspicious, run Spybot Search & Destroy and clean out the adware, then set your cl_cmdrate & cl_update rates to thirty or forty each (so long as you get a 60+ FPS) :D

Contrary to popular belief, defragging you HD does nothing for lag.

But yeah, spyware check is right up there with "make sure the computer is plugged in" these days... Along with my reboot haiku. ;)

Thothie, defragging doesn't help with lag; it is just a good thing to do :p

I have tested, and know for a fact, that defragging your HD will help make it start up faster :)

It happens with all mods. What are those cvars?

Just Half-Life or all games? If it's all games, the cvars aren't gonna help ya. You have a net config, router, software service, or memory issue.

Assuming broadband:
cl_rate 15000-20000
rate 15000-20000
ex_extrapmax 1.2 to 1.5
ex_interp 0.1
cl_updaterate 25-40
cl_cmdrate 40-50 (or half your average FPS)
fps_max 999
fps_modem 0
cl_lc 1
cl_lw 1
cl_lb 1
cl_cmdbackup 2-8
cl_resend 1
cl_nodelta 0

examine with:
net_graph 1-3

Also try:
vid_wait 0 //helps with FPS sync issues that can affected net play caused by some odd LCD display drivers

Pings in the 1000's though, suggest something is fundamentally wrong at the system level (such as the aformentioned net/software/router) beyond what you can fix with cvars. Even if someone adminmod exce'ed some evil config on you, it'd only affect one mod. As a last resort, you can try deleting all your .cfg files for a given mod, but you will lose all your key bindings. (Make copies case it dont work)

You can also play with the properties section of the mod in question and add to the command line ("launch options"):
-heapsize [half your ram x 1024] //helps some people with odd memory issues
-noipx //helps some people with odd networks (doesn't hurt anything and saves some overhead)
-32bpp //helps some people with odd graphics cards (ATI mostly) - try if net_graph tells you your ping is fine, but it's your FPS that suck. If it turns out to be FPS, fiddle with the low-res settings in the stickyhere.

Hahah! Wasn't that t3h funn3hz :D

Since it could come back at any given time, you may want to (if you have a wireless router) make sure a neighbor isn't stealing from you. Also make sure cars don't randomly park somewhere nearby you (I have a wireless router, and some friends, just to screw around, would park their cars in t3h driveway & hook up) :D
