Well I recently got jury duty and I have read a ton of different things about how to get out of it, one of them is burning the letter since its not actual mail, and play amnesia.

Others have said to call "jury nullification" and I was just wondering if anyone here had any good tips or tricks, since my jury duty is tomorrow I am burning the paper and playing amnesia...

To be honest I only know vaguely what this is. You and some others have been randomly picked to be the jury in some case? Odd system, we don't have this in the Netherlands.

He's talking about avoiding even going to the court, it sounds like.

Well the idea is this, I burn the paper, and when/if they ask I play the whole "I got summoned to jury? I never got any notification in the mail..." supposedly since the days gone by ive found out 4 or 5 of my friends do that and never even got a warrent out for them.

But I would feel more comfortable if i had atleast 10 people tell me they do that x.x...im just paranoid like that since I hate pigs lol.

Yeah that's a horrible idea. You can always say you don't feel comfortable with the case because of X and you might be bias and you may get excused from it. But at the same time you would have to actually go to see what's going down. Although I don't understand why people are so against Jury Duty, it's your civic duty to do this task, and I think its a small price to pay to reap the the benefits of being an american.

Being the worldy lad that I am, I always like to "attempt" to compare different cultures and their way of thinking on a subject. I wonder what the people in those war torn 3rd world countries complain about? Mortar shells and ways to avoid it? It just seems like we live in such a cushioned society that we bitch and complain the the smallest amount of work that takes us away from our daily lives. Seriously, jury duty and voting? Oh my, we live in such a demanding society these days.

Jury duty can be fun though!

...cept when they tell you to show up at 6am... Or if you live in one of those states that allows employers not to pay you for the time you need off (truly criminal in my opinion, as while most states provide a stipends to compensate you, it tends to be no more than would cover gas and lunch.)

Most legal way to get out of it, is to show up for jury selection, and just make sure you bullsh*t your way to appear extremely biased, and be a real smart-ass about it. (Lawyers hate educated jurors.)

Barring that, you can write back and make it clear that it would cause you "undue fiscal difficulty" and that your employer, in all likelyhood, would fire you, or himself be put under undue strain, for missing any of the days requested. They won't ask you to prove it, but you may get your next jury summons sooner.

If you are a student, you can cite testing schedule conflicts, and keep requesting re-schedules. If you can drag this into December, you'll likely not be re-summoned, as the whole selection processes tends to get turned over in January.

I've known people who have gotten warrants for ignoring jury duty summons, although it's a bit like J-walking tickets, no cop will take you in on it, as the paper work is far too much. Unless, of course, you are black - then yer just boned.

Do NOT ignore a Grand Jury summons. Tis one thing to have your city or county come after you for a trial jury summons - it's quite another when the feds come for you - 'specially if you happen to be or appear even the slightest bit Arabic. Do everything you can legally do to get out of it though, as those are real time eaters.

Um, HomestarR, this is serious discussion and that means no stupid, unrealistic suggestions. Noone wants to risk life and limb in the military just to get out of jury duty. Now to contribute to the seriousness. I honestly think you should just put up with jury duty instead of trying to get out of it with something illegal, though, if you can persuade your way out using one of Thothie's methods, then good for you.

Just for your information, Homestar is with the USMC, so describing joining the military as a "stupid suggestion" might not be the best way to put it

I just meant that it's a bit extreme for this situation and the potential losses are far worse than jury duty. "Yay! I don't have to do jury duty! Oh crap, we're goin' off to war, again." One land mine later. "I miss my legs, my dominant hand, and my nads." Also, if it's another 'nam then there may be loss of sanity.

I guess that depends on how much you really dislike jury duty.

Knee deep in shit
Funny thing. Technically I am with the USAF, but I am in a joint shop working side by side with all branches. My leadership is USMC though. So I am an Airman WITH the Marines. Airforce doesn't pay my paycheck though, the Agency does. So what am I? Truly hard to explain.

I was being serious. Getting out of jury duty is just one perk. There are many other good reasons to enlist.

I still have my nads and all other extremities. Although having your up-armored HMMWV hit with a couple RPGs after setting off an IED shakes you up a little. (True story, still trying to regain full hearing in my right ear. Should be back to 100% in less than a month) Casualties in every war are getting less and less, so I don't know what you are so afraid of.

If it really bothers you, don't go infantry. Pick up a technical field and have job security. No lay-offs here yet.
