Would it be possible to make this more compatable for windows server 2003? The support staff had to give me remote desktop because they had no idea where to put it =p. Maybe like a readme could popup or something? Just a thought.

edit: I'm installing it now. Also note that it didn't say to make a msc folder.

edit #2: H:\User Files\brian\GameServers\TC77618505663836451618848
In that folder with a bunch of numbers is the valve folder.

The installer couldn't find your steam directory because the hosting company made it overly complex... okay...

Thanks for sharing?

Translation: I have no idea how to fix. =p

edit: All server companies (at least which I have seen) have strange pathways like that.

In all seriousness, I'm looking for server help. My listen server is very crappy, as anyone who has played on it knows. I paid for 2 servers to go up. I'd like to be able to use them. I was thinking maybe in a future patch, some support could be added to windows server 2003, or maybe in time even better - linux compatability.

If H:\User Files\brian\GameServers\TC77618505663836451618848 is the same as \HLDS, containing a \valve folder, isn't it as simple as putting MS:C @ H:\User Files\brian\GameServers\TC77618505663836451618848\msc ?

If that itself is the valve folder, meaning HLDS.exe is in the \GameServers folder, wouldn't you just install MS:C @ H:\User Files\brian\GameServers\msc ?

I'm quite sure nothing special needs to be done for Windows Server 2003 support.

On the other hand, linux support is a huge feat - linux cannot handle dll files (except wine, but he's asking for native linux support) and the mod code would need converting and recompiling into linux .so files, requiring modifications to the code to use linux calls. And if that's all you do, the linux .so files will have unused clientside only code in them. Not to mention all the bugs that could creep in because of that conversion process.

Edit: I'm sure the installer was designed for end-users, installing the mod to play the game, not for Dedicated Server Operators. The installer has been a huge success in my eyes - not only did it get me back into the game, but i've seen many new players in the game too! Uploading to filefront (and posting on hl2files.filefront.com) was a genius move for the mod. :)

@ mib weather u like brian or not isnt the topic of this thread and new servers are good for everyone in the community caus more servers mean more players more bug reports and so on so please dont offend people who are spending money to get us new servers

@ subenji99 linux support would be the next serious step to get more professional hosted servers caus most cheap game server hosting companys use linux but i got to admit that it would be planty of work port it to linux
i got to learn how to use linux for work maybe i can figure out a way to port it in the future

@brian we would need some screen shots to help u
maybe u could use the servers search to search for hlds.exe
open the explorer and directory tree and make screens
maybe one of us will recognize something

Well, the installer file didn't know to make a msc folder and someone a support staff person who hadn't played msc before wouldn't know to make one.. Perhaps something as simple as a text file to explain this to server companies? Something along those lines. On another note, Thothie, I reccomend making him a developer immidiately. Looking as his response, he clearly knows what he is talking about, and unlike the responses thus far, he seemed to have a general interest in helping.

edit: I'm not at home, atm, but when I get home, I will post screen shots.

Yes, because we should make devs of people we hardly know because someone who tried (and failed) to get the source code by manipulation told us to.

Right.

Not saying that Subenji isn't being helpful, just saying that we hardly know him, and you shouldn't be telling us what to do after proving how much a failure you are. ;) Now, if HE wants to talk to Thothie to help Thoth figure these things out, he can feel free to do so. We're not going to appoint devs on your whim.

Sounds to me like your hosting service is on t3h crack.

For one thing, of course the MSC installer isn’t going to find your DS folder. No mod installer on Earth, for any Half-Life game, can find your DS install – because it can be ANYWHERE. Unlike the Steam Client install, there's no registry entry to tell anyone where your HLDS is installed.

If your host has no mechanism to force-kill and restart the server, your host shouldn’t be in the video game hosting business.

I'd love to have a linux based DS, but we don't have anyone on staff who knows how to do that ATM.

...and no he doesn't "clearly know what he's talking about". He's on the right track with everything else, but that just means he knows more than you, and that isn't saying much. ;)

As for how to install the HLDS, see the thread linked in my sig. Procedure is the same for Windows Server 2003 as it is for any other version of Windows (even the dreaded Vista).

At that point, I was assuming a direct port without modifictions - assuming that SC.dll (and therefore SC.so) would end up with clientside code. I did get owned though :p

Source of this reasoning:

The only thing I can think of would be that only your client gets messed up, meaning the pack is on the server, but for some reason doesn't get transfered to the client. It almost makes me think that the SC.dll ISN'T server side only >_>
