Why not just upgrade to XP? You can get that insanely cheap now a days. Heck, I'd sell ya a copy.

Knee deep in shit
Windows ME has got to be one of the worst and most troublesome operating systems I have ever had to deal with. Why not upgrade?

My information.
You should just get Vista. DirectX10 won't work on anything else. And the water-effects are worth it, if you like high-quality shiny things.
*/me hoards his shiny-things stash!*

OMFG my friend has Vista on his laptop...They totally jacked a whole bunch of ideas from Apple, it's hilarious...
Could it have any more prompts to do things? Also, it fails at networking, I could not for the life of me get that damned thing to interact with my home network, or even when I put my comp and his on a hub...Stupid Microsoft.

agreed...and by the way - an upgrade is NOT always the solution...ffs you people sound like my parents, who upgraded thier computer to XP from ME...

it was stable on ME, and ran CS/NS at 60fps...upgrade to XP and it goes down to 40 tops, upgrade to SP2, goes down to 10...and gets bluescreens of death...

i just hope they don't try to upgrade the stupid thing to vista -.-;;;

Total lose. Vista takes up too much memory.

You just have to know how to configure it right.

Security... OFF
Updates... OFF
Visual crap... OFF

There ya go, runs smooth like butter.

Also, Vista keeps track of the programs you use the most and keeps them in memory for fast loading. Could be why lots of people complain about memory usage.

or you could actually upgrade your computer so it can run vista, like you're supposed to.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com is where I recommend getting any PC anything, but you cant order separate parts (that I know of)

If you need a computer and want vista, use their site.

FYI Vista doesn't use ram like XP does, Vista uses a different technique that checks how much ram you have and fills up most of it with programs etc that you use often so it will start faster.

If you really want to complain about Vista then you should atleast know what it is you are complaining about ^^

It also runs about 5x as many services, so the point is irrelevant, it really is taking up more memory, and CPU, in every way possible.

Windows ME was the 98 kernel with a bunch of crap piled on top of it. Vista is the XP kernel with even more crap piled on top of it. Windows Vista is the new Windows ME.

Hopefully it'll last just as long... Maybe M$ will drop the buggy media protection crap, make a new kernel, and give us a real new Windows OS. (Albiet they haven't really done that since Win2k)

I don't know either, CMD.

Perhaps we should all convert to iMacs.

Trust me, if Linux supported all games, and if I wasn't a lazy bastard, I'd've already switched. :D

It's teh funneh that you guys should mention linux since i had ubuntu installed on my old comp no more than two days ago.

All you linux-freaks say "oh it's gotten alot easier nowadays, it's pretty much just as easy as windows now" and i can agree that it's gotten alot more easy installing it but using it is just as much of a hassle as it's always been.

I couldn't even install something simple as the displaydrivers from Nvidia and just then uTorrent popped up on my new computer saying that nowarez winXP was done, anyone care to guess what the next thing i did was ?? ;)

Basically you can piss and moan about windows being crap but atleast you don't have to read the bible to use it :p

This isn't some sort of flame or anything :D i am just tired of hearing from everyone that windows sucks but still 90% of those very same people run windows, how come ??

Oh and i'm a gamer = linux is a no-no but i thought i'd be able to run it on the old computer but sadly, n0pe.

PS Necropost ?? reviving a dead thread = necro ? it wasn't *that* old :p

Razor, keep it to yourself if you download warez (illegal software programs).

As to Linux: if you want to play Windows based games on it, get WINE. It isn't *as* effective as just using Windows, but it averages at over 90% of the same effectiveness (since Windows games are... well... designed for... um... Windows).

And I think Thothie (was it you, Thoth?) has already mentioned this before... but Linux O/S's are crappier than Windows... in that Windows is a corporate, high-profit PC operating system... and Linux is pretty much freeware (so their coders aren't motivated to make it safer against viruses, exploits, glitches, etc, etc).

Same philosophy with a doctor, or surgeon. You'd prefer to be treated by a highly paid one, who has a reason to dedicate his very being to your survival & recovery... than, for example, a British doctor (or surgeon), who doesn't get paid a lot for their many years of higher learning and responsibility-up-the-ass job.
British docs are probably more morally sound than American ones, since there isn't as great of a financial attraction to the profession... but they aren't as motivated. So moooo.
Finishing it off with moooooooo, for the sake of randomness.

:D
