interesting, my sheath key and drop key are next to eachother. I nearly lost a raven mace in the middle of the blacksmith boss battle in Calruin2. I dropped it onto the elevating slope and couldn't pick it up until it dipped itself into the lava and comes back up.

You're lucky it came back up. I once threw a raven mace in the lava. If it weren't for J-M's loads of hp it would have disappeared.

I once dropped my mace somewhere mid-battle on the_keep. If it weren't for the server consisting of only me and Shuri, I wouldn't have been able to spam the battlefield to find it in time. (I had just died and had to run all the way back to it and search >_<)
