I don’t know what happened, I stored 6 items in the new chest, switched servers, then the character was gone. Please help! And thanks for completing the new patch!!!

Did you close Half-Life before switching servers?

Not doing so often makes one's character explode.

Thanks! Unfortunately, that wasn't it. Character came back, I joined a server, quit HL, joined a new server and stored 6 items in the new chest, restarted HL, and then entered a new server...character was gone again. :-/

Any thoughts? Should I just stay away from the chest?

I hope not... This would be the first report of an issue like this with the chest. So far the worst it's done is refuse to open for some folks.

If you want to help in the research effort, do it again. I won't count any resulting need for a rollback against your monthly limit. ...and um... Will provide +1 internetz.

Anything I can do to help! I just restarted, logged on and my character is still missing.

Let me know when it's back and what you want me to try and I'll do it.

Wait... You're saying the roll back didn't work? Maybe I need to take you further back? Or are ya saying you tried again and your char fried?

edit: I loaded your current character locally and he looks fine. :\

edit2: I think your perfect hugger dagger maybe corrupt, not sure. But I'd dump it before doing anything else.

Ok, it's back now. I just tried this, and the character slot is empty again.

I stored: Ice Tomahawk, Fire Tomahawk, Elven Longbow, and a North Maul.

I disconnected, quit the game, restarted HL, joined another server, and the character is missing again.

Something is happening on your character that causes all his quest data to reset. I think it's tied to one or more corrupt items, but I can't be sure. :\ I hope this is some rare, preferably unique, situation, but I've seen other people who have trouble with quest data - who can't do the bloodstone ring quest as a result, for instance.

With luck, MIB will give us a new system that will write the bank to FN, thus bypassing the need for quest data. However, quest data is important for a lot of stuff, and will be even more so in the future (eg. Titles) so this is rather disturbing.

What should I do now? Should I try storing one item at a time? Or can I just not store? Any other tests you want me to do?

I tried storing one item at a time on my local server, and it corrupted you after the perfect hugger dagger. :\

I think you should likely stay away from the chest.

However, if you want to test on a local listen server, you can grab your character here:

Drop the contents of that in your msc/save folder, setup a local server and start playing with the bank in Helena. Maybe you can figure out exactly which item(s) are causing the conflict, if any. I'll be doing my own study of this character to try to figure out what else it maybe.

On your local server, I'd also suggest dropping all your items, one at a time, looking for corrupted ones. I maybe one is so badly corrupted that it's putting a "BS" character in the item data stream when it gets shifted about from inventory re-arrangement - in which case, removing nearly anything could set off a character corruption if it saves while in that state.

Ok, I dropped everything on the local character one by one and got this message:
"cl: Error (CLIENT): Error: __MsgFunc_Item --> Begin"
When I dropped or picked up the following:
Perfect Hugger Dagger
Kharaztorant Dagger
Flamelick
Heavy Crossbow
Litch Tongue
Boneblade

Is that what we're looking for?

'fraid not. Lots of items cause that. Not sure what it is, but it doesn't point to anything unusually wrong with any specific item.
