Server Help (Tried sv_lan 1)

I would like to create a server but when I create a server on the first map it brings me into the game to the char select screen and as soon as I click my char it crashes to the main menu. This happens everytime could someone please tell me how to fix it.

P.S I have tried sv_lan 1 and it still crashes. I typed it in console before I create and I have tried after i created it and i have also went into the triedlistenserver.cfg file and added in the line sv_lan "1". these all dont work. What could I be doing wrong?

you have to type sv_lan 1 first then you make the server and if you want people to join after you've made the server, change the value back to 0.
