Server problem(s)

I usually run a MS:C devg server and I can usually run 3-4 people with around 100-300 ping. But recently, when I restarted my computer (without changing anything) my server crashes everytime he joins. However, if he leaves while trying to connect, the "connection problem" ends for me. This occurs both if I join the server and he is on it, and vice versa.

It's not because of the computer (i don't think), because i've been able to do it before.

Sounds like you're using a shitty LAN network or something: or maybe one of you is stealing the other's Internet? Haha; these are realistic suggestions too :D

So.. Hmm.. You're saying, this guy connects, and your server crashes.

...is this a LAN or FN server?

...is it updated with the betapack?

One thing I could think of is *maybe* "he" picked up a beta item, and you're running a non-beta server, and for some reason, it doesn't like it. I've done some testing with non-beta clients on beta-servers, but almost none the other way around.

Can he connect to other servers without crashing them? He may also have a buggered character.

Does your server generate an error? Does his character have a 9th tome in his hand?

Can other characters connect fine to your server?

Is *he* updated with betapack?

Until we know who "He" is, I say we ignore tikigod; just pretend he doesn't exist... or he can actually reply to his own topic he started up here, more specically giving out the information we're all asking for; so that we may help him/her/unitary-creature (aka an It).

Okey dokey. Sorry.

Hi. Question answering time.

I'm saying that when either of us are in a server at the same time the server lags to about 2000 then 3000 and then stays and displays a connection problem, eventually resulting in the server crashing (supposedly).

This is a LAN server. (Could that be/is it a problem?) (PS. What's FN? Isn't it like a central server or something... i still don't understand that)

It isn't installed with the betapack... it's installed with these...
sc.dll - May 15 2006 23:20:01

client.dll - January 15 2006 17:49:39

ms.dll - January 08 2006 17:15:54

We haven't picked up anything. We're just trying to get it running.

He can connect to other servers perfectly fine, as can I. And I've deleted our character save files twice.

I don't get any errors when it crashes. Simple as that.

Other people cannot connect to my game... and he has not installed the betapack...

I'm thinking I should install the betapack and try again :D...

HE IS MY FRIEND OMG! His name is Mike. :-/

PS: Why can't we get AMXX on MSC?

FN (or Fuz-Net) is a special server with a database of characters that game servers connect to retrieve character information. This allows the same character to go between servers without having to upload the character information to each server.

The AMXX devs are assholes on a monumental scale... They've not only gone out of their way to make sure AMXX won't work for MSC, they actually removed bits of functionality that had the potential to permanently resolve several major issues MSC has. I suspect the head dev has it in for us for some weird reason. (Granted, I've had similar issues getting AMXX support for NS linux, Brain Bread, and WW under other aliases, so I suspect he just has it in for everyone not running CS or TFC)

The AMX2006 people have been VERY helpful, however, and their program is much more stable, and with the various modules, has almost as many features. You can grab AMX2006 for MSC, completely configured with custom plugins, over here

As for your issue...

I have had issues with two puters hooking through LAN with MSC myself before similar to what you describe, but other people run it fine, so I always assumed it was either something fux0red with my network, or (judging by the way it acts) something about P4 packet-priority hyper-threading MSC doesn't like (cuz, the way Windows works, proggie priority also affects packets, and HT alters this functionality.) If I connect to my server through my LAN, it lags to hell, even with the server running HLDS on a seperate machine. It does this more with some players than others, as if it's a crossnetwork conflict of some sort, but that wouldn't be the issue with you and your friend on the LAN.

Suggestions to get around that: Try enabling the Ping-Booster pack in the AMX2006 package I just linked above (see the !readme.txt for info on how to do that). Other suggetions are raising/lowering priority of the HLDS.EXE (or if listen server, HL.EXE you are running). There's also switching to an HLDS or Listen server, depending on which you are trying ATM. If you are using old-style P4 hyperthreading, you can also try adjusting CPU affliation.

It's odd that it was fine before, and now it fux0red though. Especially if nothing's changed at all.

Very cool Thothie. I'll try this stuff out.

Hm. AMX2006. Cool stuff.

PS. I know I should be putting this somewhere else but... is there anyway that i could join the MSS team. I can model and map. :D

Also, I'm interested in making a like new "campaign" for MSC. Like another whole story line... I just have one problem... how do you put in new npc's that say their own thing.

Oh, then it could be a crossnetwork thing... and a lot of other nutty possiblities. :\

Contact Lord K (Kuroneko) about joining MS:S and provide some examples of your work. Mind you, they are more or less in advanced planning stages still sfaik.

You two are attempting Hamachi LAN over Internet, aren't you?

It re-acts... harshly to say the least when you play MSC LAN using it. I tried it out recently; I noticed a char of mine (client side) randomly disappeared into the oblivion of deletion/over-write :D

Due to the style of character file saving on MSC; I would recommend *AGAINST* using Internet LAN (Using programs like Hamachi) unless you are doing something like Server-Side save :)

No. No Hamachi. Just put on the internet. And connect.

Could also be some bit of spyware, or some service setting it self at some odd threading priority and going "screw you, I'm in charge!" when MSC's non-threading CPU whoring starts, thus locking it until it crashes.

The alpha MS.DLL might help that:

So, host it on another computer? I suppose your computer has severe conflictions, perhaps from overusing open ports from the same IP address (server + playing).
