Just thought of something while discussing the crazy exp ramp and the pointlessness of training past level 35.
Once the awesome class system is implemented, how about a different FN network for let's say, MSC 2.0 (1.11 would still exist but not on the same FN) With a different economy setup, remade exp ramp, hp and power bonuses ramp depending of the achieved level and class system. It would be a totally new type of gameplay and it would suck to have eveybody just powerlevel their new classed chars by just transferring god items without having to actually get one.

On the other hand, I'd be happy to see my char wiped to have these changes in effect, but making a new FN for those who would cry/ragequit/cut wrist if it would come to be neccessary to implement these would save the potential hype it would cause.

Well, seriously I can't imagine a better MSC experience in any way...

EDIT: Why the hell did I post this in general :|

I can in fact run a seperate installation of FN, fact I used to! before I started hosting FN I started hosting BN (Blastnet). It confused a lot of people, upset thothie a bit to as it was going to cause a rift in the servers. Same thing still appies today, if we did do that then what littls servers we have would then be split between the networks.

which for this mod may not be all that good, most people are also against character wipes to begin with.

Again though it wouldn't be hard for me to start a new FN server with the BN name so you could play on a new network with everyone as a low level.

It might be different than a second FN that does the exact same thing this time though, only those who don't want to lose their current character or start a new one with great improvements to some critical aspects of the game will still be able to use their character in the old FN, but I'm pretty sure everybody would end up switching to MSC 2.0 one day or another . And the point of a second FN is exactly to prevent a character wipe.
I'm also pretty sure that if the class system ever makes it in game, mostly everybody would start a new character anyway to enjoy this new system.

P.S. Since "character wipe" is mentionned in this thread, I have to say this :
There will NOT be a character wipe so don't start fires everywhere!!!

There may be a way to avoid this issue all together. I am going to use a simplified class system as an example. in this system we will have three classes: Knight, Mage, and Generalist/Adventurer.

Everyone starts as an adventurer and in order to change to a mage or knight you must go on a quest that changes your class. Once this quest is completed and your class is changed you are back to 5 HP and level 1 in every area. you have to basically start the game over as a mage/knight.

HOWEVER, you can also relinquish your class by doing a different quest. When this happens, you are an adventurer again and all of your old stats are saved.
If you want to be a mage/knight again all you have to do is complete the quest. Your stats will save for every class so becoming a mage, then generalist, then mage again won't leave you with 5 hp every time.

To me this is an ideal system because it will solve all of the problems mentioned in this thread, plus a few more. No longer would we have high level players quit for months/years/forever because there is no longer anything left to do. Once you have out-leveled every enemy and farmed every item you could start the game over as a new class without any penalties.

It would also make this game more noob friendly because suddenly high level players would be able to play the low level maps with new players again, without things getting terribly boring.

What do you think of this system Thothie? Is it realistic? And if so, worth implementing?

Edit: Also, I don't know how much my opinion is worth but I am completely opposed to any 'permanent' class system. Players should be able to take on the role of any class with any character. They shouldn't be able to change classes by snapping their fingers though, which is why I propose a lengthy quest.

I like this idea. Though... What happens to the equipment the character has? If you reset your stats, you wouldn't be able to hold all of it. I suppose there would be a warning at the start of the quest to put your high level/heavy stuff in storage first. Could work if we can store more stuff in the Wondrous Chest. How stable is that, Thoth?

Eh, I'll have to come back to this later but eh... If folks wanted to start over from scratch, they would - and if you want to, you can... If you want to play with only low level players, join one of the newbie servers... (err.. okay, THE newbie server, jeeze we've gotta fix that...) Not worth setting up a seperate FN just for that with no way for the players to cross over later.

I'm hoping to introduce races, quite soon though. Folks will *have* to start over to play as a new race, and the other two races (dwarves/elves) will level entirely differently from humans (one being ultra generalists, and the other being ultra specialists). There will be no potion to transform your high ranking human into a high ranking elf, or what not. So, I expect to see small teams of angry newbie dwarves charging into dungeons soon after the patch that implements them.

!!!!!!!!!

This is incredible news! How is this going to work, exactly? How will hings like armor work? Is it relatively easy to reskin the armors so it fits a dwarf or elf? And also, what about orcs? Have you any intention of ever introducing them as a playable race? It would be badass enough for me to buy a second copy of Half-Life just for that.

Yeah. Don't leave us hanging now! MOAR INFO PLZ

Edit: Also, when this becomes a reality it will be a great excuse for mappers to start making more low-mid level maps.

Wouldn't expect new races in FEB2010... Indeed, I'm having trouble cramming enough into FEB2010 to make it worth it to force the update on the clients. I probably wouldn't expect it in MAR2010 either, but then again, the dev team is certainly showing enthusiasm for that particular project. There's a lot of details to work out and various experimentation to be done though.

Basic concept was to supply an entirely new XP model for the dwarves and elves to provide an experience of game play different enough to make starting from scratch intriguing.

With one exception it seems to be behaving... (Beyond the opening mechanism jamming when used/aborted by multiple players.) That one exception is worrisome on multiple levels though. Reason being is that an individual with corruption like that will likely have trouble with ANY quest data, and we're depending on the quest data for a lot of different things. We're even depending on it to fix some of the bugs we have with the armor display now. I've only ever ran across one other character with a quest data issue such as this.

MiB is still working up the FN write system, which would likely replace the current bank, thus removing the need to depend on quest data for that, and removing inventory from the character data entirely. Still, worry what's going to happen to such folks with other quest data issues.
