I haven't downloaded it yet... but from the user reviews on the page... I'm not sure if i can handle it....

I started playing it once. While it's pretty freaky (the scaring moments are quite good) it's also amazingly hard. At one point in the game, a bit after the first or second level I think, you get dropped into a closed room that has about five zombies and some weird super zombie in it. You only have a few rounds of ammunition and some lame melee weapon (forgot what it was) that barely damages things, and you basically get raped in that room. For me, it wasn't possible to get through there without cheats.

That's when I stopped playing

It's also way too dark. Sure, it adds to the atmosphere, but the part of the game that I played is basically Doom III in a dark skyscraper.

I remember that mod

I played it while it was only a beta, and not considered finished... quite awhile ago too. I didn't think it was scary though (maybe because I had my brightness & gamma blasted)....

The brightness and gamma thing might indeed be the cause of you not finding the mod scary... pussy

I played F.E.A.R. and the expansion, both of them... twice, and I can say that some scare parts in Afraid of Monsters (at least, the part of AoM that I played) are as scary as some parts in F.E.A.R. and the extraction point. The mod is really well made as far as I played it.

It's good, but not as good as Poke646 and Absolute Redemption in my opinion.

Edit: Someplace Else is also a masterpiece by the way.

Ah, I guess that explains the lack of lighting

No but seriously, Afraid of Monsters would still be impressive to me even if ten guys made it - it is creepy and pretty fun, just a bit too hard (or maybe I suck at it) and as I said before, way too dark.
