Defense Map

I started coming up with ideas of a sort of "Defense" map. Think "Helm's Deep." maybe with a little story behind it: "Oh noes, we pissed off the orcs, and they're attacking our city!!"

I was thinking the basic design, would have an open area where orcs spawn, with a fortified wall, then into the city with buildings and stuff, then a small-ish castle. i'll try to illustrate now:

(I tried.)

Basically, you'd start by climbing up the wall and trying to defend from orcs. they would send archers to snipe you, and trolls to knock down the wall. if the trolls reach the wall, and stay there for long enough, the wall will collapse, and they would move into town. then, you must defend the castle. it'll be the same as the wall, when they reach the gate for long enough, the gate breaks down and they enter the castle. at which point you lose.

Maybe have limited waves, and if you survive offer a reward. possibly increase teh reward based on the number of commoners that survive?

anyways, any suggestions/comments?

Keep in mind that is a very basic layout, and any suggestions would really be nice :)

Great original idea! But maybe instead of a castle, it could be an outpost of some sort. And when you win, you bring the orc warlord's head to a supervisor and he gives you a key that unlocks a chest in the outpost, but later will be moved to a big castle with an armory and such!

hmm... maybe i'll just play the defense map that has 214 replies :p

maybe i'll also look for the map i want to play before start making one :p

i pretty much felt like making a map, and this was the first idea i came up with and started working on it before seeing if one existed. Any other suggestions for a map?

Man In Black, if you are really this f***ing stupid, why don't you just tell evil squirrel that he ripped the idea from the old map ms_helms_deep? Oh right, you probably never even played that. Well, why don't you tell him he ripped the idea from Helena, then? Idiot.

Really though, if it's already being done, why bother with mine? If we both make the same thing, his will be better and nobody would play mine. i was *trying* to come up with an idea that i haven't seen before, that might be alot of fun. if anyone has other suggestions that's great

I DO have right to complain. And we didn't rip the idea from ms_helms_deep. We planned it from scratch, the entire map pack. So shut it. And we didn't rip the idea from helena either -.-.

Why don't you tell him yourself, or pull your head out of your ass long enough to realize that he read that anyway.

J-M, if i wanted to remake helena, i would do just that...i've already decompiled it so i know where everything goes and could EASILY remake it (fairly accurately) and copy+paste the entites back into it...i'm just not doing that because thothie has been working on old_helena...

yes, its a defense map (like helena), but it does not have a big orc-tank that comes crashing in, nor does it have multiple people to protect (which, no one actually protects, just the guy in the inn), its walls are destructable, it has some natural defense, and oh yeah...its a hell of alot harder than helena.

speaking of destructable walls, Thothie, the new AI seems to have fubared the AI's ability to reason... "oh, i can't hit the guy who's hitting me, better look for a new target!" (thats what they used to do, heres what they do now) "i cant hit the guy who's hitting me...oh well, life goes on....*ow* no it doesn't."

i like the idea of an undead assault :D

of course...undead dont much like the sun...so there would have to be an 'unnatural fog' covering the town...perhaps you could read the MSC backstories to find something in there to recreate, i believe there was a large army of undead following lor malgoriand at one point...till he wasted them...

i say make it different... orc attack maps are pretty much... undead assaults would be more interesting

also human towns.. we got enough of that...elfs are pretty much unused and thats a shame so lets have an elven town that is under attack by the undead...

Suggestions:
- (this is Gurluas' suggestion) Elven town/city undersiege by armies of the undead
- rocky town under siege by bandits (but that's a bit Helena-esque)
- a ship (which you are on) under attack by orcs or bandits
- or if you're really ambitious, a tree city (Wood Elves?) under attack by something nasty

The map is a cheat map, there would no way thothie would accept it on the FN nation ;)

I can't remember if there was something on Helms Deep to give it cheatmap status (something like a flood of Helena chests or some such...)

...and I thought you were all ripping off old_helena - as Helms Deep has no objective, IIRC. ;)

Since I can't work on Old Helena (due tot he vote) - I can probably get Lord K's permission to release it, and get someone else to revise it.

Only real work it needs is that the front of the Inn needs to be blown open and I'd like to have some catapults roll in somewhere in the middle. (I've got a Catapult brushwork model you can use). Oh, and convert to trigger counters.

Dunno if anyone would volunteer for that.

I was hoping to expand on Helena2 more, but it'll work as is, and link to it accordingly.

you would get some mscave chests after fighthing big hordes of orcs.
and alot of trolls...plus bludgeons

I think (if there's ever an undead siege map done) that they should have some kind of siege weapons of some sort to take out walls or something. Orcs sieges have trolls throwing boulders and catapults, and undeads should have some king of big skeletons turrets standing still and shooting the walls while all normal ones are attacking defenders. The turrets would stay at their position and keep casting i.e. huge fireballs doing a LOT of damages to the walls and doing melee attacks while attacked in melee range. It would be like "OMFG kill these big skellies NOW!"
Oh well, just a suggestion as I think a siege is not the same without siege weapons! :wink:

can the npc's actually attack walls and have them break? i didn't think they were that smart, and i'd just have to script it so when they reach the walls for long enough the walls break

npc's can attack walls via lures and trigger coutners...but they dont right now because of the new AI stopping them from changing targets...
