Hmmm... He should've built void rays to help protect his colossi from vikings and mutalisks.

Really simple strategy. Hell, some stalkers could do the trick, too.

Can the /b/ronies pick one thread and stick with it? ;)

Meh, personally haven't seen any real evolution in the RTS genre since 1992's Dune II, save for graphics (*maybe* Homeworld for adding a third dimension, but even that changed little). Seems once you've played one, you've played them all. :\

If purchasing a game was solely based on evolution of the genre, when would you buy a new game? I haven't seen an evolution in the FPS/TPS genre for as long as I can remember...

I have... Granted most take one of the letters out of the genre - usually the "S". But there's FP-RPG, FP-Stealth, FP-Tactical, FP-Fighter, FP-Squad, FP-Platformer, FP-Horror, FP-Comedy, FP-Flyer, FP-puzzle, FP-NaryEveraMonster, FP-OMGHoard, etc. etc. Third person being, I must admit, even more varied, although I don't much like third person due to being totally robbed of immersion.

But RTS's are all interchangeable, just change the colors and names of the units. It's basically the same game it was in 1992, just on ever advancing technology, and I can't think of any genre, that's as old, where that's more true (closest being the MORPG, ironically enough - especially now that off-line RPG's are using the OLRPG formula ><). I suppose the 'if it ain't broken don't fix it' rule applies, but it's such a fixed part of our consciousness, by this point we can do it in our sleep. Thus, I think it's best when added to some other genre that's been done to death, like with NS or Savage. Same can be said of Tower Defense, though the concept is much newer, every TD game's essentially the same as the first one.

True, but it's a certain affinity for the genre that keeps its player base. I've tried MMO's, and just can't really keep with it (Especially since nearly all new MMO's of any type charge a subscription).

First person shooters in particular may not have changed, but I've grown around them to enjoy them, despite the same core concept, only with a few fancy colors thrown in for variation.

RTS games I started back with Starcraft, and even with minor differences between all the other titles being put into the genre, I still like them all; just due to the fact that I like the genre itself. The content changes won't stray me away.

Tower Defenses, I guess since I'm just not good at them, I only half-enjoy (if that even makes sense), mainly due to the fact that I can never win a freakin' one. So disheartening when you spend 90 minutes on a game, just to lose.

Third person shooters I don't really have a quarrel with, aside from the fact that most of them use an ever-so-broken "cover system", which sucks in every game.

Gaming is just like literature. You stick with the things that pique your interest, even if they don't revolutionize what they're part of. Same could be said with movies. I'll stick with a movie that involves a lot of killing/action, even if it's got the same stuns/kills/what say you.

You know, I really don't care about RTS games at all, but Supreme Commander 2 is just brilliant because of the wildly creative units they have.

But then again, rarely having played RTS games, for all I know they copied half the units >.>
