MS:C quits in offline mode

As I know, Steam has serious troubles with IE7 installed causing games in offline mode to exit, like on my PC.

Question: does MS:C use any HTML stuff and if, where? I'd like to play MS:C offline and currently, it does not work.

I don't demand to fix that bug, Valve should. I just ask for a workaround.

It doesn't use any HTML stuff. IE7 is not the issue.

The issue is MSC refuses to start in true single player mode. Like most Steam mods, It ignores the listlib.gam settings in this regard. Thus it always attempts to validate with Steam.

You *might* be able to play in off-line mode once, providing you manage to connect in on-line mode once before hand. But when you restart it, it won't go.

I've bitched about this repeatedly, as it makes it neigh impossible for me to test on my laptop when I'm oot and aboot. I've also bitched to the Steam guys themselves, they are clueless as to a solution.

So the problem is partly with MSC, but mostly, with effing Steam.

Basically, you are SOL. I've no clue what to change in the code to restore true single player mode atm. It may require server functions, and simply not work in true off-line mode at all.

Aha, thanks for the info. That is damn strange, since a while ago, I could play MP mods offline.
Looks like Valve fucked up this one. Have you asked the support about that?

My information.
Steam = Fuck up & failure beyond words created by the Valve people & the such...

WON System from old days = perfectly fine, ran awesome, and was fun. Mods didn't bug up, true offline mode was offered; and most-importantly... each mod had its OWN startup icon, that didn't need to go through several other programs (steam, half-life.exe, steam again) in order to start itself... it was a simple use of HL engine & mod icon, and it worked....

I miss the WON system :(
I also miss that massive WON hosted site that had THOUSANDS of custom maps, all localized for downloading & use... :( ***** :( *****

I really like steam's GCF system. I wouldn't give that up to go back to WON. (Especialy since I only got 2gigs of space left on this here hard drive.)

There's no compression in the GCF system... And for some reason the Half-Life GCF is LARGER than the raw Valve install - so you're actually LOSING drive space. In addition you get the lack of response time and mod compatability issues, and the need to have two installs of half-life on your computer to host a proper server. So yeah, more than double the wasted HD space.

In anycase, all those assholes who are beta-testing Vista for free on the basis that it is "the latest and greatest" will soon have us all in the same Steam boat with our OS. Probably a lot of the same people that helped bring us Steam. Don't support crap that makes everyone buy a new machine just cuz you wanna be "1337" FFS!

People will pay to have their eyes slowly pulled from their sockets, if they think it puts them on "the cutting edge". *sigh*

I'd like to have your problems, guys...

a) with Steam, every mod can have it's own start icon. A matter of 1 minute.
b) I will buy Vista with a new laptop I was going to buy anyway
c) WON is dead, crying for it won't help anything
d) I asked the Valve support and am waiting for an answer. I requested to fix that bug.

Well Steam isnt a problematic program. I learned this a while back. Steam is like your OS, the better your computer is running the better Steam will run.

(If you dont believe me, go format a decent XP computer and install Steam on it.)

*I agree with you on the HLDS thing though, Why teh flip would they do that?*

But steam also gives us Steam IDs and permanent bans, instant updates, and an instant play of the games you JUST bought.

The same thing happened with Counter-Strike, XP, and runescape *COUGH!*....

There are still people playing Counter-Strike 1.6... infact A BUNCH OF EM!

I've surveyed them, and i'd have to say the majority of them are stupid.
I ask them why they are still playing CS1.6 and they say "Because CZ SUCKS!"
So then I inform them that CS:Source is out and they say "CSS sucks too"

Turns out, they like bunny hopping and exploiting the AWP. They would just HATE to play a more balanced game.

Then there is XP... OMG... everyone was like FREAKING XP SUCKS. NOTHING WORKS ON IT. ITS SO DIFFERNT.

I logged on to 98 the other day (the computer was a dual-boot till recently) and I'd have to say i'm glad we have XP.

And runescape... Just had to try it... Actauly I was there before all the kids invaded. At the time it was JUST THEN transitioning to RS2 (it used to be 2d) EVERYONE HATED IT! I even hated it. But I forced myself to play for 2 days, and I got adjusted. Aand then I liked it better than RS1. But there were still people moaning, who didn't try more than 1 day on RS2.

Basicly, shove the PAST aside, dont be AFRAID of change, and try to find the good in what is available.

There's some irony in that your Laptop won't run Steam. ;) Why would you put VISTA on your secondary computer of all things? Just to slow it down more? I mean, hell, I run my laptop on Windows 2k just to squeeze all the power out of it. Tis like owning a Dodge Ram, buying a candy-apple red Volkswagon bug, and then a getting trailer for the bug! ><

I just did, and Steam is more crashy than ever. Takes me quite awhile to hunt down all the registry tweaks and support info that allow it to run with my software and hardware. Scary, since I just replaced 90% of my hardware. Even scarier with the effing Steam forums search function being broken - thus I have to get most of my best tech support regarding Steam from German gaming boards translated by Babelfish.

c) WON is dead, crying for it won't help anything
Just because the laws of physics suck, doesn't mean you aren't supposed complain about them.

...granted, unlike the laws of physics, the death of WON you can actually DO something about it: like NOT supporting future bloatware programs that are DESIGNED to accelerate the already planned obsolescence of your hardware: LIKE VISTA!

It's the same thing, all over again, and all you Vista kids are going to drag us all straight to hell with you - again.

HL2 doesn't even support vista yet... nor does it support any other Direct x 9 game... well unless you say emulating is supporting it.

Just make a post. The people on the steam forums are REALLY helpful.

They helped me through, pretty much all of my new hardware problems.

(Not with steam, with the computer alltogether.)

I dont know anything about Vista ATM, so uh. I'ma stay outa that.

If you think my postcount HERE is high, you shoulda saw the one I had on Steam before the last time they bombed it.

Admittedly, a few of the harder to find fixes I got were through there - and it is also true - the general help database is pretty extensive. It is also, true, however, I've had to seek the answers for the vast majority of my questions elsewhere. Finally, it is true, it has the only community based tech support forum I've ever seen, without a working search function. - How many months has that been broken now, five I think?

Sadly that stupidity alone kills the best thing ever to come out of Steam.
