the oblivion online thing also isn't true online, sure you can see each other in the game but your friend is actually an NPC. With zero built in net code people have to be rather creative to add the net code.
except the clients are not synced, thats the biggest issue. Sure you can see an NPC that looks like your friend and you can attack it. However weather, time, NPC movement, and the lag one will experience will all be erratic at best.
In the end there would be just way to much information needed to pass from client to server in order to keep them all synced together. Though none of this matters anyway cause we are sticking with source.
