If you have a laptop with dual graphics cards (Integrated and Nvidia) you'll likely have this problem. Goldsource games generally run with terrible performance but other games run perfectly fine. Nvidia Optimus decides when which card should be used depending on how heavy of load the computer is under or what the program profiles tell it which card to use. Normally you can modify these profiles but with Half-Life for some reason it won't let you choose your more powerful card.

Here's how to check if you have this problem.
Right Click Desktop > NVIDIA Control Panel

If it says Integrated Graphics and the box is greyed out, then you have this problem.

You need to download a very small program called Nvidia Inspector

Make sure to place the program on your desktop, this step is important for later.

Run the program and follow these picture instructions.

And if you followed everything correctly....

Not that the workaround is applied, keep in mind that you may need to open the import the profile to reforce it to use the preferred graphics card. (Just double click the .nip when you've associated it with nvidiainspector). If you ever launch msc and notice it's performing terribly again just open the control panel again and check (Picture 1)

Also, the profile and program need to be on the desktop in order to keep the file association together. I've tried moving it to different locations but never had any luck. It's a minor inconvience.

Your game may flicker to the main menu for like a second every 15-30 minutes, this is normal and you'd adjust to it. This may or may not happen to you, and this may appear more depending on what mod you play.
This fix works for all Half-Life mods as well.

Last thing, if you ever meet anybody who says their computer/laptop has a great nvidia graphics card to run the game but is experiencing issues like this, maybe direct them to this thread.

Questions/Comments? Just post and I'll try to look at this thread often.
