Optimization?

Would it be possible to reduce CPU/RAM usage by a decent amount if a month or two were spent just cleaning up the code/maps/scripts/resources/etc? I'm sure msc has alot of code redundancies, given how many times things have been reworked and how many new systems have been implemented, and I think I've heard mention of something having to do with new scripts/systems not working on older maps because they use old scripts which have since been redone/replaced. I'm bringing this up because I used to be able to play with little difficulty (and could even play lan or start a listen server), but over time, msc has gotten better and better at kicking my computer's ass, and now it's gotten to the point where I've just spent roughly 3-4 hours trying to play, with almost no success. Adding new content with patches is futile if they also make it harder for people to play and drive them away with crashes, freezing, and general computer failure. Surely, at least one patch could be devoted to getting rid of all the crap and making it run smoother (and for some people, getting it to run period).

Oh jeeze... That system barely runs HL mods under the 1998 WON standards, nevermind the Steam standards, where the resources used have multiplied at least ten fold. :\

The MSC Settings for Low End Puters sticky might help you some, but without a major upgrade, this game just isn't going to be kind to you no matter how much optimization we do.

I dunno if those are the optimal drivers for the GeForce2, I think likely not. You could save some drive space, if you need to, by reducing the size of your page file to fit your memory. Speaking of which, a memory upgrade would be the cheapest thing to do to this system, and would go a long way to mitigating your MSC woes. You can probably find of 2GB of ram for this system for under $50. I'm not sure what sort of memory that model of AMD takes though, and there's no info on the motherboard. If you know or can get your motherboard model and head to the puter store, they should be able to tell you what kinda memory you need.

The game *does* need a lot of optimization, and it *is* only going to get worse over time - both from the Steam end, the HLDS end, the OS end, and from the mod itself. The number of resources required accommodate the ever-expanding list of items and functions is ever-increasing. We optimize some stuff with every patch, but it is a losing battle, especially without the time nor ability to re-write huge sections of the program from scratch. In any case, we're never going to have it so smooth that we can really support a GeForce2 system with 256MB of RAM, no matter how much time we take out - I'm surprised it runs for you at all. :\

I should probably just get a new computer. I saw the holy grail of puters (compared to my piece of crap) at costco for like $600-800. This thing seemed like a beast compared to everything I've ever used. 1337 processor, ram, graphics card, USB 2.0. The only thing that might be a problem is that it has Windows 7. Is it another Vista or did they finally figure out that upgrades are supposed to improve stuff?

[rant]Either way, my parents are like money nazis. I can't spend my relatively huge savings on ANYTHING. I have to earn the right to spend my money. A good report card gets me like one game, even though I've got nothing but 1337 classes which should warrant more (calculus, statistics, french 4, spanish 1, scifi fantasy & mystery, applied media tech). And I doubt they would let me save up my buying privileges to get a puter/console.[/rant]

http://www.msremake.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7608you should do what i did... make your own computer... it can get pricey when it comes to the graphics card and stuff but you have a wider range on what you can start off with... i migrated from a computer that was all on 1 board... nice comp and data space... didint last me long before i got mad at it though...

I bought a video card for £80 (Convert that to what ever currency you use) which in me eyes, is not a lot. The card runs Dragon Age on almost maximum settings (Direct x 9, still on XP). I also got a quad core for like... £120. I already had 4gb of ram so I just stuck it in my computer. I know run brand new games on maximum settings with a decent FPS and I only spent around £200. Which isn't even a months wages when I worked 10 hours a week XD
