This can refer to several different errors:
The "too many wads" as mentioned above. 8 wads in WC/Hammer is a good limit,
more may cause this error among others. If you are using more than 8 wads
you can use Wally to combine the extra wads into one custom wad.
Too long a path/name for the map or compiling tools.
Only a limited amount of memory is set aside for the path/names.
Solution is to move the compiling tools or map into a shallow folder.
Having a space in a path/name. Examples: frequently /Program Files/ is part of the path name.
Compiling tools do not like the space between "program" and "files".
Solutions are to either use the MSDOS pathname, or to move the offending files
from under the spaced folder, or put quotes " " around the whole path name in WC/Hammer
so that windows uses it right. If your map has the space in its name
(eg. Bob map), remove the space and change it to (Bobmap).

Yep i have WAY to many wads i took every wad in the MS file :D

Edit: Wootage :D it works and now to make a tangable map thats playable
Or.... play my self !

Edit: Again ! Crow how do you get the Img's in your maps ?
the ones the rotate with you ? i want to make a fire
and im kinda clueless... :(

Sprites? create a new entity (entity tool: the thing that looks like a light bulb kinda) and select "env_sprite" as its class. in Attributes set "Render Mode" to "Additive" set "FX Amount" to maybe 180 and under "Sprite Name" you can browse for a sprite (hopefully it opens up the ms sprite folder) just click on something like Fire1 or Fire2 and it should load the location of the file into the text box and your set. Also if you want to make it bigger or smaller just change the "scale"

Thothie anything to add? (or anyone else that knows thier hammer :D )

Err ummm...

Get sprite explorer to view the various sprites. Remember you can use all the sprites in valve/sprites inside the Half-Life.GCF (which you would need GCF Scape to look through.)

Remember if you give it a name, to click the "starts on" checkbox on the flags panel, or it, well, wont. Think there's a reverse frame checkbox that comes in handy time to time as well.

You can make sprites stand still as well, but it requires some hex editing. I think there's some German tool somewhere that can do it for you too. (Not tried that yet.)

Also check out the Verc Collective env_sprite entry.

You can use sprites to show models as well as sprites, and for all sorts of nutty effects.

and if this works ill just need to learn how to make NPC's work :)

Also is there gonna be a NPC building thing ? so you can set up what they
say and what they sell ?

put in just the imediate sub folder and the sprite, ie.

sprites/fire2.spr

It may only show up as a box in Hammer, depending on your settings, but it should show up in game.

its there i looked... grrr maybe its my seting "pulls up hammer to look at the setting"

edit: poopie i can't look at the maps that are allready there :(

Now that is NOT the sprite name and the immediate folder - that's the whole damned path! ><

On the modelname you should have "sprites/fire2.spr" - that's it - no path.

NPC's are covered in the tutorial under "Monsters & NPC's ". You can't control what they say, for the most part, but if you put in Kirthos the Travelling merchant, or what not, he we sell stuff when you click on him, or what not.

I always leave my maps open source, but the only full map I've completed for MS is Gateroom - which has no NPCs. :/

Although the authors of the vanilla maps do not make sources available, you can look at how they put NPC's and such with Ripent. (Which is, for the most part, how I learned the MS entities anyways)

the path is the "error" message that pops up

i have it set as "Sprites/fire2.spr" but
the path pops up error thingie pop's up
when i try to start my map !

ill just remove the sprite thing for now and just try
to get my npc working !

Edit: i have a feeling that this thread well last intil i finsh my map :D

I'd try again, and undo the Smart Edit. Near as I can tell you must have browsed to that sprite, and Hammer stuck in the whole path. If the sprite was just missing, it woudln't give you the whole path in the error, just the sprite name.

But a map without sprites is like an Oreo without a creamy filling. ;)

I fixed my fires and stuff and i made a small house when i first built it
i made on the walls a func or what ever Pushable so i was able to smash it

fixed that up

btw got any good places to post files like my map ?

Press ALT-P (Map -> Check for Problems), you will find you have many, and Hammer can help you with them. (But ignore its biatching about there being no player start.)

Primary problem I see here is that you can only twist objects so much with Vertex Manipulation before they become invalid objects. Individual brushes are actually fairly limited in the geometric shapes they can be.

You also have a lot of overlapping brushes, which is a big no-no. Brushes should not go through one another.

just for kicks, i found this SpriteMage you can use to lock the axis of a sprite. havent tried it yet but yea... just for kicks :roll:

EDIT: just took a look at it. its in german. might even be the same thing thothie pointed out. im not too sure how it works
