I need help with my damn copy of windows.

My trial ended so I had to register it, I have the key right on the side of my computer. I've never used it, on anything else.

Whenever I open up my "Windows Activation" bull crap, I choose to validate it over the internet.

The FIRST THING that pops up says "Incorrect product key, try again"

So it gives me the normal screen, and I type my key in. (I have checked it a hundred times, i'm not typing it wrong.) I hit retry.. and :

"Incorrect product key, try again"

I don't want to activate it over phone because I've had a lot of shit over the phone lately (I had to call microsoft 3 different times for a friggen box to send my xbox in) is there anyway to fix it?

I also want to avoid wiping my hard drive, because I have things on here i'll lose that are massive in size.

Halp?

If it's any help, I've found if I go to the register screen and go to the help on their website, it loads IE (what dumbasses) and I can access my C: drive and other sites from there.

is your computer built by a manufacture?

if so are you using the OS that came with the system?

if not then thats your issue right there.

Microsoft has gotten really strict with reactivating Windows. If it's already been activated 1 or 2 times, they won't let you automatically activate it anymore. If you call them, they will give you an activation code....

That is if this is a legal copy...

Do the phone activation. It's not that bad, I've done is many many times. However, what I find odd is that a Dell install disc on a Dell machine should not require a key, unless you used the wrong disc.

The Dell install not using a key is because they don't use the original setup Microsoft puts on a retail copy of XP. It's either modified so it automatically puts a key in, or just copies a pre-activated factory image over.
