That would be because said map is ancient. Predates Aleyesu, amongst others. The map in the betamap thread is more accurate, although still a bit out of date. The distance between the maps, even there, isn't accurate. They are spread out that way mainly just to make room for them all and for their names remain legible. Also, at least according to this map, Bloodrose doesn't even connect to Aleyesu at all. Why not just 'pretend' that those ruins in bloodrose are actually the ruins of the city Melanion? It would be nice if that transition didn't go straight to the heart of melanion, though, but rather the outskirts. Then connect the outskirts to the ruins itself and that region will appear much larger.
Melanion's connection is already in Bloodrose - it's that mine gate that opens up near the front entrance. Melanion is buried underground, beneath Eswen Sylen and Kray Eldorad. Presumably you'll deal with some mines and tunnels before you hit the more spectacular buried ruins, but I wouldn't expect it to drag out for more than one map - although Eswen Sylen and Kray Eldorad both will likely have some underground sections that connect to it.
Bloodrose was supposed to have more stuff for low to mid level folks to do around the surface. Alas, Foamy got carried away in the caves, so there wasn't much in the way left of entity space.
Looking at the MSS map, I guess the elves blew a hole in the mountains around Blood Rose, being sick of having to brave Melanion to reach to the human empire.
