taken from moddb profile:

"After 15 months we're proud to release Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut.
Both myself and Minuit would like to thank you for all your support and dedication to the mod and really hope you enjoy the fruits of our labour."

Your name is David Leatherhoff, and you're addicted to a new painkiller from a company unknown.

They keep coming, and you can't stop taking them.

Lately you have started to experience illusions, dreams picking at your deepest and darkest fears.

Finally, you go to the Hospital, seeking help. First, however, you make a stop into the bathroom, where another bottle of pills awaits you, standing out like a beacon in the night in your depraved eyes.

When will it all stop?

Afraid of Monsters is a survival horror mod for Half Life 1.

What's new in AoM DC?

- New monsters (no Half-Life reskin) and weapons
- Flashlight can only work with batteries that you pick up
- Improved maps and totally new maps
- 4 different endings and ways to beat the mod
- Random monster spawns
- New hud, sprites, textures, sounds, models and animations
- Easy mode is easy, normal is normal, hard is hard

Fuck I remember that game, it was so scary even for a single player half life mod.

The original release was really scary, and the atmosphere was outstanding, but the game was also amazingly hard. I don't suck at FPS games but damn did I get my ass kicked. In fact, I got my ass kicked so hard that I just stopped playing it. I might redownload it, if the whole "Easy mode is easy" thing is true.

I could never beat the first version without cheats.

I thought the mod author screwed up the mod too bad by making it so difficult that I didn't even think it was worth my time to cheat in that semi-impossible mod :p

YOU DONT GOT TIME TO MAKE A PROFILE
I got so frustrated at being stuck in the first few levels I just /notarget 'ed my way through the whole thing just to experience the rest of the maps. Damn cool stuff.

Yeah, about being stuck... I do remember some insanely excessive find-the-door puzzles in the first part of the game. That's also one of the reasons I didn't bother to play on.

Ah well, I should stop whining now because I'm going to download the new release anyway :p

yeah, first timers must start in easy. Once you beat the game once you could change to medium.

And that green door could be in the hall you start the game

I found AoM to be easier than Half-Life...conserve ammo, use the knife religiously. It's easier to kill zombies with the knife than the gun. Save the AK47 for the "boss fight" at the end or just for really tense moments. Shotgun basically broke that game :) Run up to zombie, pull trigger, back up, repeat. Lotsa ammo for it too!

I'll check there next time I play. Also, is it just me, or do the zombies attack faster and hit you most of them time when you try to knife them?

Yeah, zombies now are harder to melee since they have slightly different attack animations.

I finally beated the game for the first time (1/4 endings, on normal) and I think the difficulty system is ok, but the problem is that some very specific areas are brutally difficult.

I just downloaded DC and...I'M STUCK! I can't get out of the hospital! I haven't even turned the power off yet! I must be incredibly ignorant to miss so much at the start of the game :?

Played on easy, at hospital, first enemy encounter...

I'm waiting until it's light out.

Have not had such a "holy S***" factor since I was like 6 and booted up Resident Evil 1 and saw the zombie with the gore in it's mouth.

Theres just something about low poly, not flashy but truely horrid for the eyes stuff that gets to me. Like the old spiders in MS used to trigger my arachnophobia.

So far, has to have some of THE best effects i've seen the HL 1 engine use.

(Btw, wish we had a knife as fast as the one in this game)

i just finished it yesterday on normal difficulty and i have some things to say about it:
(warning super long rant in progress)

good news first:
kudos to bringing the survival horror feel to the game. i literally felt more freaked out in this game than the original with the use of the new creepy fog effects and the 4 weapon system unlike the original, where i literally had like around a 100 shells at the last part thanks to the vast amount of weapons. game was also relatively longer than the original, flash light system implemented a new style of gameplay and the 4 endings give new replay to the game even after you finished.

now the bad news:
1st problem i encountered was lag. my com could play the original and full fps without lag but in this game, there were some sections that literally bogged down the amount of fps that i got (5 fps anyone?) also comparing it to the older aom, i felt it was...MORE frustrating at some moments than scary. i mean literally when i first met the invisible guys i got REALLY pissed coz at some points (not sure if it was a glitch) i had to fire 4 shots with the magnum instead of 2 when tryin to kill it and yes it hit coz i saw the blood effects. second, balance in the game is horribly off, with ammo and health being extremely scarce at some points (esp the machine guns. no offence but they seem kinda useless without ammo for it doncha think?) and the retarded placement of the enemies at some points (the last part is REALLY annoying unless u use a glitch to beat em)
and the multiple weapon system, though original, is kinda irritating (trust me, stick with the 20 bullet handgun, DUN pick up any other handguns coz they hav lesser ammo and no auto) but it becomes a litle bearable later on as u get used to it. (at the ahem shopping mall, i was literally swearing instead of being scared coz there were so many shit load of them and i had like 28hp?) and lastly, if u hav played the first game, sadly most of teh shock factor is gone now coz most of the scare effects are recycled (somehow i felt there was less in the dc version).

/rant ended

sry for double posting, but do u mean at the forest area? well somewhere near it to it (i had problems finding that place too coz i had no flash and i didnt noe it was actualli so freaking near!!) is actualli an area where there is a wall u must scale in order to continue.

and btw, DUN ever drop the shotgun. EVER. trust me on that.

actually, you retain the ammo of weapons even if you drop them, so you drop your shotgun, switch to mp5k and next time you grab another shotty you will have the same amount of bullets.

And yes, some enemies are tougher for no aparent reason.

I kinda stopped playing it for now. I was running around in the hopsital and I opened a door to a room and I found a zombie in a wheelchair, which scared the shit out of me. I'll probably try playing it again later today.

Also, How exactly do you get the different endings? Are there different routes you take or something?

I've made it to the sewer so far. I also found a hammer but I can only have 1 melee weapon at a time. :-(

Which one is better, the knife or hammer?
