Well, Diablo 2 mods are also better based in lore, too. MedianXL puts a lot of lore found from the literature, and expands upon it. There are other mods that completely change the flow of the game, making the classes have different roles and play much differently.

Half-Life doesn't have much too much lore to utilize, though I'm sure you could find something other than

if you looked hard enough.

75% crappy blackmesa fandom

Yellow shift? ENGINNER ADVENTURES? (the list goes on)

It sounds like you're assuming the people who start these mods have any resource available when in reality they don't. I personally don't see anything wrong with making a fandom mod when you're just starting out in mod making, especially if the maps are fun. On the other hand if somebody who has made 3-4 mods all based on blackmesa then I think they should really try something different.

I thought FER was being generous saying that 10% of mods are "Excellent Complete Modifications"... I'd say about 99.95% of HL mods are half-finished dead weight - but there's so many of them, there's bound to be some diamonds in the rough, I suppose - including the best game of all time: Natural Selection (Yes, I know you thought I wer gonna say "MSC"). ;)

There are indeed so many half-finished, dead weight mods, for Half-Life and Source, there's a mod dedicated to them:

Yes, you know you've a lotta crappy mods for your engine, when you have a mod dedicated to crappy mods. ;)

While we're on the subject, I'm going to follow Jelly and worship The Trap. It's a singleplayer Half-Life puzzle modification and it's so ingenious, you would not believe it until you played it.

I haven't finished it yet (the puzzles get REALLY hard and last time I had it installed, I didn't have a lot of time due to my study) but I'm going to reinstall it tomorrow.
You know how a game can be rewarding when you finish it? Rewarding in the sense of "Wow, it took me ages to figure that one out, but now I got it, so booyaka!" that feeling? The Trap has that all the time. It's just genius.

At least they should keep them as personal projects rather than release them to the public. Certainly Moddb is not a place where you can discuss modding but rather distribute it, HIT forums might be better for starters (if you can survive the friendly community), or even any other HL modding communitty. These guys who start modding are pretty much nosediving into a concrete wall going to moddb expecting help of any kind rather than silly comments or opinions.

Most advanced mapping I've seen I think. Genius modification. :p

Eh, hl mods are in need of more co-op style based gameplay, after you beat a shitload of sp hl mods, it gets frustating to go back to them and beat them without either: cheating/screwing up with the storyline/giving up after doing 1 or 2 chapters.
Most sp mods i've played, would be way better if they could be played in co-op with a few friends.
