In some cases, if the texture isn't tileable, you can paste a texture into corner. Paste again, rotate 90 degrees, repeat until area filled, and make a tiled texture in that fashion, but I suspect tileing tis less of an issue with model textures. (Some versions of PS have a function to do this automagically but it tends to fubar.)
There was actually one good texture generator I know of by KPT, but it's no longer compatible with the newer photoshops, and they never ported it to the later versions. (Closest thing they have now is "The Materializer" which pales in comparison - although it's not completely useless, as you can make bumpmaps with it and such.)
A new trick I've been using is rendering lighting effects to cast more shadow and bring more stuff into relief...Tis what I used a bit on the UShield skins.
