Personally, I don't think we need another "thornlands texture" map. But that is not my call. Your architecture looks pretty good so far and I can't wait to see more, but try to add a lot more elevation. Plus I also think you need to make the broken wall a little more patched up. If the Commoner really didn't want anything to go in (or come out  ) then I think he would have spent a little more time on it.

So far looks good. Will this be a day, night, dawn or dusk map? Where will it connect to?

Valve usually builds "orange maps" with bare gameplay essentials before actually working on level art and textures. Concentrate on the layout of your level, then apply textures and lighting afterwards. Create the basic map structure using dev textures (type "dev" in the filter box) and big, simple blocks. For a Counter-Strike map, place some spawn points, some buyzones and some bombsites. No stairs, just ramps.

I follow that follow that quote.

i don't, its a waste of time to have to go back and retexture everything...may aswell use the textures you'll end up using later.

if u go back to work on ur previous areas ur most likely to find bugs and have new ideas on areas.

Thank you evil.

And I would make stairs over a ramp, any day.

Thanks for all the responses so far.
Anyways its very basic right now cause I still need to add a lot more to it, and I'm just using the thornlands textures cause I can't really think of anything else. I've finished the cave and added some more details to the house, and started working on the rest of the map. I also made the hole in the wall more patched up to keep those darn skeletons out.
For textures I should just stick with what MSC comes with right? I still haven't looked through all the wads so there are probably some other rock and grass textures I could use.
Also, since I haven't gotten past lv 13 yet what sort of monsters do you think I should put in the rest of the map since this beginning area has some lower ones?
Oh and how does the day/night system work in MSC anyway? Should I make my map just be daylight for now?

you don't take into account the REASON they use those techniques, and thus - you shouldn't use them.

they use them because, presumably, they are waiting for the appropriate textures to be made. they also need to rough out areas before making them due to monster AI potentially needing adjustment.

that quote was a suggestion for source mod teams, not individual mappers - besides, i believe that we have a bunch of textures already?

The only reason y i follow what valve says is because other wise i never can start maps i check the time and an hour has past, which i have done loads of detail but hardly any areas, and when i havn't done hardly any areas i stop mapping because it feels too long to make it.

I just took a look at the world map and noticed a disturbing empty spot between the Thornlands, Helena, Heras, and Daragoth...Maybe my map could link between them in some way. I'm starting to work on a pretty cool area right now, these ruins you fall into and have to do a certain thing while being attacked by undead nasties. I'd like to have a boss down there too if possible. Maybe a higher level wing of the map too just so everyone has a reason to take a look when it's done? Anyways here are some screens of the new scheme I picked along with an area I just started working on. I really appreciate any comments or critiques, once again. Having many ideas is much better than only having a couple.

Imagine a broken stone arch on the left of the last shot leading to the ruins and a scary cave to the right with a precariously constructed bridge leading up to it. I was thinking of having some orc archers on the higher places and some warriors rushing you from underneath, and past the caves maybe an orc camp to give them a reason for being there.

Have one path at the beggining lead to the "low leveled aread"

but have a cave right next to it saying "DANGER : ENTRY NOT ADVISED. ONLY THE STRONGEST EVEN HAVE A CHANCE OF SURVIVAL. "

And then you can add the b_castle boss and bludgeons like I suggested.

Well, not really.
