YOU DONT GOT TIME TO MAKE A PROFILE
Lowlands!!! :D

That would be the first map of my campaign expansion. I suggest you check it out. It's pretty entertaining. Sorry for randomly advertizing it, but hey, you asked :wink: , and i hvent got any new feedback, and its been like 2 weeks. JM's server has them, and if you can get in touch with me or jm on msn im sure we can just send the pack to you. Or maybe JM has a link somewhere allready...

Through experimentation with my own computers, and chit chatting with some players who can't seem to get their own servers running, I've discovered the following will prevent you from running a listen server under Windows XP:

- A copy of HLDS running on your computer, or any computer on your network (running any mod on any port) (results in ED_ALLOC fatal error)

- An EagleFTP server running on your computer, or any computer on your network (and likely any active FTP host) (crash to desktop)

- Microsoftnet Framework being actively used by a program on your computer, or any computer on your network. (crash to desktop)

- Microsoft Debugger active with On-line Symbols library open. (results in ED_ALLOC fatal error)

- SBC's Wireless Networking setup (crash to desktop)

- QOS packet scheduling causes some computers to lock when starting a server, though I've yet to figure what causes it to happen on some and not others. Disabling QOS packet scheduling does cure the issue for some computers though.

- Some users report they cannot create a server from a Guest or Limited account on a network, but can from an Administrative account.

So, in short, if you can, kill anything and everything that's accessing the internet or other computers on your network before Establishing a Kingdom.

If you can't, however, because you are at work, hosting servers on your network, or because your parents are using your network for a business that includes server hosting of some sort, so far as I can tell, you are likely SOL in terms of creating a server, or moving your character anywhere without another server to connect to.

I tried just using "map edana" under some of these conditions in hopes that it would start a single player session, and therefore ignore the network issues, but no such luck. Still crashes under those conditions.

If you're using SBC's wireless solution, or some other wireless network is causing you similar issue, you'll have to get a direct connect, no other solution as of yet.

To disable QOS packet scheduling, go to Settings->Network Connections->Local Area Network (or at least, it's usually the LAN) - right click on it, click properties, and uncheck QOS Packet Scheduler, and click OK.

Even if you can't start a listen server via "Establish a Kingdom", you still maybe able to create a dedicated server on port 27016 and connect to it. The process to do that is too lengthy for me to write up just now, but I will say it means you must copy your entire MS folder to "\Steam\SteamApps\username\dedicated server\ms" to start with. From there, go to http://www.steampowered.com, click on 'support' and search for "dedicated server" - that'll point you in the right direction. (I'd post the link directly to the article, but it's too damned long)

Good luck! And happy adventuring! (sic)

I figured that one out but it didn't come to my mind that it might be relevant to post, so thanks a ton Thothie :)

It would be appreciated if someone could address my issue here:
I attempt to make an MS Server, but it crashes back to main menu after a bit of loading. Here's the console info:

Code:
BUILD 3305 SERVER (0 CRC)
Server # 1
Serverinfo packet received.
Error: could not load file sprites/invxtra.spr
Unable to open commandmenu.txt
Remote host: Master Sword 1.35 Server w/AMX
Spooling demo header.
SteamWaitForResources() time: 0.090 seconds
Compressing split packet (19668 -> 8149 bytes)
MP3_InitStream(12, media\Half-Life04.mp3) successful
Netchan_Clear() : reliable length not 0, reliable_sequence: 1024, incoming_reliable_acknowledged: 1
This Steam account is being used in another location (Hmm...This doesn't compute...But it doesn't affect the creation of other servers in other mods...)

Host_EndGame: Server disconnected

Now, this may be a repetitive problem, but if anyone can offer advice I'd appreciate it.
Also, I can host servers in other mods and games, so this would be an MS problem. And, to head Thothie off :) , I've already got the Enhancement Package and such. [/quote]

It's an issue with the latest Steam update. A good bit of people are having problems creating servers for third-party mods, all getting the same problem (myself included). Unless there a solution I'm unaware of, all we can do is wait on Valve to address the issue.

Oh, if that were only the truth... Upon seeing your answer, I took to the Games List and started a HL2CTF server, which went off without a hitch...So, unfortunately, the issue still resides within MS...Thanks for the prompt response though.

HL2CTF is on an entirely different engine.

The issue can't simply be an unmentioned MS issue, as I'm hosting a DS server, as is Hellsdiner, and from time to time, as is J-M. It would have to be a new one unique to your ISP or configuration, or some new Steam issue that affects an isolated number of accounts.

A stand-alone dedicated server (HLDS) requires no Steam log on at all.

It is true you can only have one copy of HLDS running on your network with MS though (granted, this was mentioned above). J-M apparently found some way around this though... And that's not generally the error it generates.

That doesn't look like a console error list generated by the Dedicated Server though. If you are using a GUI server you may encounter unique issues, as I don't think anyone here has tried to run MS under the GUI DS for a very long time (it's always a little funky anyways, and can't auto-restart). If this is a Listen Server, several people have generated listen servers with no issues recently, as have I, but there are a great many things that can interfere with it, as described a few posts above.

Proper HLDS output example:
Code:
Console initialized.
Protocol version 47
Exe version 1.1.2.0 (valve)
Exe build: 00:30:19 Aug 11 2005 (3213)

~ASDAS~, creator of asdasdevstuffv3... Just wondering, dRkILL, what makes you think this random thread-humping noob is ~ASDAS~?

Did I find a way around this? As far as I know I never managed to get two working servers running, only one working and one non-working (retry char data error).

:oldshock:

And I've heard alot of people say that a recent Steam update disables you from creating an MS listenserver. I personally wouldn't know, because when I create a server, I start up my DS. I would not be surprised if it's Steam's fault though, considering all Sourcemods got fucked over a while ago because of the new bloom DLL's from Steam... :roll:

His name just reminded me of asdas, but then again asdf is just the first four keys in the middle row of a QWERTY keyboard. I'm probably wrong.

sorry for this random question, but i didn't want to me a whole new thread and i doubt it'll change the topic :wink:
I remember long ago there was a custom map that was like in a rocky sort of landscape and it was very well done and it used that skymap that changed from blue to orange. it was a few houses biult into rock wall in different areas and i think it had a floating dock and maybe a boat. it seemed like the whole thing was floating actually. there where alot of places you could just jump off.
J.M. do you remember this one at all?

Of course I remember the glory of house. The skybox is what caught my attention when I first played it, and the fact the whole map is floating (and that you can fall off) also caught my attention.

I still wonder who started the map house, and I'd love to see it finished.

Oh, and the map's name is house. :p

As described in the first page of this thread, and in the enhanced pack's .cfg's, you have to open your ports:

//If using firewall/router, remove
//the first two slashes from the next line:
//ms_ip "x.x.x.x"
//and replace "x.x.x.x" with your true IP
//You can use IPConfig in DOS to find your true IP
//also open all these ports:
//- 2200
//- 2400
//- 47624
//- 27005
//- 27010
//- 27011
//- 27015
//See your firewall/router manual for information on how to open ports

That Error 108 you have there happens sometimes when someone disconnects from the server. Usually this happens when the creator of a party leaves the server. The effect is that no one can see their chat text, and eventually, the server crashes. The only way to fix it is to change the map or let the server crash and restart.

Moral to the story: don't form parties.
