A classmate of mine stated this earlier today. I will see him again on Tuesday. I expect many, many pages of valid Steam complaints by that time.

GO!

-too big for a game browsing progam
-cant play games until you have the latest updates
-cant play offline if you didnt download any updates
-cant play offline if last time you played in online mode you were unable by reasons other than updates (game crashed, etc)

may not seem like a big problem, but when your connection likes to die for a few hours (or a whole day), it gets really annoying

more notes about Steam would be interesting

When I first got steam, I hated it so much, but now with all it's updates, it's alright.
Plus, noone plays RC 1.9 anymore because of steam :(

steam hijacks the volume control for my mic! What does this mean? Simple it means I have to open steam just to make my mic work... Funny thing is it doesn't even work in steam...

OH

and steam consumes way to much resources when open.

Here.
I agree with blasto in the last point. 30 MB RAM, it's kinda much, if you play games like CoD4 or Crysis, w/e

Steam is one of two pieces of software to cause me more pain than most of my any of my ex's... The other being Windows.

Anything that is more pain than a woman is a diabolic invention of unimaginable proportions that cannot possibly have been forged by human hands. Steam is the work of the devil.

Many of my favorite games were destroyed by the migration from WON to Steam (or lack there of). MSC was very nearly among them. If not for Lord K, DrKill, Ewok, and the ol’ crew, it most certainly would have been.

Most every game community I belonged to was destroyed by that same migration. Many folks my age took it as a que to grow up and stop playing video games. The swarm of 12 year olds CS fans that followed did not make suitable replacements. Nuclear war would not have as devastating an effect on my RL community as Steam had on my virtual one.

• Bloatware – Steam, with just Half-life DM DS installed, is 400% larger than WON with the same setup
• Loadware – Steam uses several dozen times the CPU and Bandwidth of WON. Even Bittorrents are more efficient (and Steam shares Bittorent code)
• Steam eats an infinitely larger amount of RAM than WON in idle (WON not requiring any when you weren't actually playing - and no additional resources in game.)
• Spyware – Steam collects data without your permission.
• Scamware – Steam has resulted in the leaks of thousands of credit cards, e-mail address, bank account numbers, and personal information.
• Betaware – Steam is buggy as hell (makes me not feel so bad about butchering MSC!)
• Random updates, made without your permission, randomly breaking stuff without explanations due to skimpy (often non-existent) change logs
• All updates are mandatory, no matter how minor or how broken, or how unrelated to any hardware/software you may have.
• It’s creation proves that Valve does not give a crap out its mod community (as does the fact that even NS – the biggest non-valve owned mod out there - picks up new bugs with each update)
• Took me, and most all my friends, away from all my favorite mods for over six months when it was first made mandatory. Of the nine RL friends I had who played WON, only one ever managed to migrate to Steam.
• Been out for almost six years, and still haven’t fixed what they broke in the games they themselves distributed from day one (TFC for instance)
• Blocked by several networks (WON never was). Nevermind the crazy packet thing they had for the first six months that blocked millions of users.
• Gets more bloated with every update.
• Forced “Steam Community” bullshit on us – breaking another dozen mods and hundreds of plugins. (Also, very nearly killed MSC)
• Just-because-you-paid-doesn’t-mean-you-can-play ware

In addition, all newborns under the age of one, in a seven mile radius around my residence, have been sent to Gabe Newell. I’ve been trying to make more, but the whole nine-month interval thing is very hard to rotate into consistency, especially given the amount of driving involved. ;) Please send more babies so I can forward them to Gabe to keep my Steam running!

Fuxed up all the maps that used global messages - especially Hunted. Tis a lot harder to play Hunted when you don't have that little indicator telling you where the president is. It destroyed Moon Cheese, Chain Gang, and a few other maps that I used to love that required multiple lines of global messages in the top corner. I dunno why the never fixed that, seems such an easy one. Admittedly, I think all the maps affected by that, aside from Hunted, were third party. It also messed up certain kinds of area goal triggers, but I think those are used solely by third party maps, but that included my absolute favorite: Betrayed – although that map at least got patched up to only crash occasionally now.

Also you can’t go from Random to your current class (which is annoying, but minor - save when you randomly go engie and have a critical defense point setup you don't want to lose) – and the config text notices for each class don’t pop-up, so if you play random a lot (like I do) – sometimes ya gotta switch weapons back and forth to figure what yer doing. ;)

reminds me of almost every week when a new garrysmod update is released

and nearly EVERY SINGLE ADD-ON for garrysmod will break because of the update, unless it is still being worked on. Makes me mad when I see great gamemodes you can't even play because of these "bug fixes"

And most of these updates change one or two things. (Rare crashes, texture pop ups? Who cares!!! I CAN'T PLAY MY FUCKING ADD-ONS ANYMORE. FIX THAT WHY DON'T YOU VALVE)

In a way, Steam is like MSC. Valve doesn't fix the bugs, they replace them with newer and more interesting ones.

I lol'd

Then I :oldcry:'d, because the latest update of wine doesn't support steam, so I'm fuxed with using Ubuntu to play on steam (runs WoW just fine though) until Hardy Heron comes out... This April. Guess I'll have to deal with Winblows until then. :\

You know what's really weird? I moved WoW from one HD to the other in the process of wiping both. I was messing around after installing ubuntu, and looked through my C:\ (the one I installed Ubuntu on being a slave), and found WoW. I was like "hay why not" and tried loading it up. It kinda scared me that it worked. ZOMBIE CRACK.
