IIRC that was posted here already. I swear I've seen it before.

[FLC] Poststalk: hey J-m
[FLC] Poststalk: I got this 9th grade geometry problem that avacado can't figure out
[FLC] Poststalk: and we're calling BS
J-M v2.5.5: not sure if I could figure it out either, as I can't remember the last time I had to use 9th grade chemistry =)
J-M v2.5.5: but I'll give it a shot
[FLC] Poststalk: naw its surface area stuff
[FLC] Poststalk: 19. A fish aquarium is 18 in wide, 12 in long, and 12 in tall is filled 3/4ths of the way. bottom and 4 sides are glass that is 3/8 in think. top is plastic. how many square inches of glass are needed for this aquarium
[FLC] Poststalk: none of the answers we get match the multiple choice
[FLC] Poststalk: [FLC] Poststalk: a. 936
[FLC] Poststalk: b. 1152
[FLC] Poststalk: c. 2592
[FLC] Poststalk: d. 702
J-M v2.5.5: oh wait
J-M v2.5.5: you said geometry
J-M v2.5.5: not chemistry
J-M v2.5.5: I rule at geometry
J-M v2.5.5: hang on
J-M v2.5.5: what does the amount by which the aquarium is filled have anything to do with this o_O
[FLC] Poststalk: multiple questions using that paragraph
J-M v2.5.5: oh right
J-M v2.5.5: OK hang on =)
[FLC] Poststalk: this is the only one i can't figure
J-M v2.5.5: I gotta draw this one out, hang on a bit more please :p
[FLC] Poststalk: lol no problem.

[FLC] Poststalk: stump ya?
J-M v2.5.5: not yet
J-M v2.5.5: I just got a genius idea
J-M v2.5.5: but I'm looking for my calculator
[FLC] Poststalk: awwrite.
J-M v2.5.5: found it =)
[FLC] Poststalk: if you can't figure it out, I got another person whose majoring in math on my friends
[FLC] Poststalk: If that person can't do it, I'm calling BS and bringing it to the teacher.
J-M v2.5.5: oh
J-M v2.5.5: wait
J-M v2.5.5: how many SQUARE INCHES of glass
J-M v2.5.5: holy shit these guys are nuts
J-M v2.5.5: I calculated the volume of glass >_>
J-M v2.5.5: cubic inches
[FLC] Poststalk: so did i
J-M v2.5.5: and was like "hey this answer is not on the list"
J-M v2.5.5: oh well
J-M v2.5.5: how many square inches might even be easier
J-M v2.5.5: hang on (again) :p
[FLC] Poststalk: xD
J-M v2.5.5 is now Away.
J-M v2.5.5 is now Online.
J-M v2.5.5: I get 1814.625

:|
J-M v2.5.5: top is plastic
J-M v2.5.5: hrm
J-M v2.5.5: nope, still no dice
J-M v2.5.5: wtf :|
[FLC] Poststalk: onto the next one xD
J-M v2.5.5: I really gotta solve this one
J-M v2.5.5: otherwise, if I go to sleep, I'll be all like "omg what's the area"
[FLC] Poststalk: on the bright side, technically it IS 10th grade math :p
J-M v2.5.5: OK, watch:

the underside of the aquarium: 12 x 18 = 216 square inches
the two big sides: 2 x 12 x 18 = 432 square inches
the two small sides: 2 x 12 x 12 = 288 square inches
the bottom (interior): (18 - 2 x (3/8)) x (12 - 2 x (3/8)) = 194.0625 square inches
the ledges at the top: 12 x 18 - [surface of the bottom] = 12 x 18 - 194.0625 = 21.9375 square inches
the inner two big sides: 2 x (18 - 2 x (3/8)) x (12 - 3/8) = 401.0625 square inches
the inner two small sides: 2 x (12 - 2 x (3/8)) x (12 - 3/8) = 261.5625 square inches
J-M v2.5.5: which brings me to 1813.625 square inches total
J-M v2.5.5: erm
J-M v2.5.5: 1814.625 square inches total of course
J-M v2.5.5: might if I copy your conclusion? the real answer is not in the list of answers
[FLC] Poststalk: hah
[FLC] Poststalk: Friend of mine got 936
J-M v2.5.5: how?
J-M v2.5.5: please have him past his calculation :p
[FLC] Poststalk: Her
J-M v2.5.5: please have her post her calculation :p
[FLC] Poststalk: [FLC] deemahh: Okay draw it out. Make a box
[FLC] deemahh: bottom edge is 18 for the width
[FLC] deemahh: the height is 12.
[FLC] deemahh: and the length is 12.
[FLC] deemahh: better yet
[FLC] deemahh: I'll do all the work in MS Pain and explain as I go along :) gimme 2 sec
J-M v2.5.5: alright
J-M v2.5.5: y'know;
J-M v2.5.5: 936 is impossible
J-M v2.5.5: you get 936 if you:
- assume that the walls are infinitely thin (rather than 3/8 inches)
- don't add the interior area of the aquarium to the calculation
J-M v2.5.5: because 2 x 12 x 12 + 2 x 12 x 18 + 12 x 18 = 936
J-M v2.5.5: and that's only the (outer) big sides, small sides, and underside
J-M v2.5.5: yo
[FLC] Poststalk: yo
J-M v2.5.5: don't do that
[FLC] Poststalk: Thang.
J-M v2.5.5: dude are you even paying attention to what I just said?
[FLC] Poststalk: yes
J-M v2.5.5: so what is your response?
[FLC] Poststalk: I dunno.
[FLC] Poststalk: I'm thiking you might be over thinking it
[FLC] Poststalk: 'might'
J-M v2.5.5: true :p maybe
J-M v2.5.5: I'm just waiting for this girl to finish her calculations
[FLC] Poststalk: http://i40.tinypic.com/k15pn5.jpg
[FLC] Poststalk: you called it btw
[FLC] Poststalk: ] deemahh: I dont think he understand that each sheet is 3/8 thick.
[FLC] deemahh: If it wanted to factor in the thickness, we'd be using cubed units.
[FLC] deemahh: Not squared.
[FLC] deemahh: It asks for square units, not cubed.
J-M v2.5.5: huh
J-M v2.5.5: hang on let me re-read that
J-M v2.5.5: OK after re-reading that five times, I still don't get it
J-M v2.5.5: if the total area of glass is asked (which is odd, true, because I'd figure people would want to know the actual volume of glass), why must I ignore both the glass thickness, and the inner walls?
J-M v2.5.5: like she's doing...?
[FLC] Poststalk: the 3/8 in is EXTRA information
J-M v2.5.5: now you tell me
J-M v2.5.5: that's not cool
[FLC] Poststalk: aw snap
J-M v2.5.5: BUT
J-M v2.5.5: meh
J-M v2.5.5: now it semi-makes sense
J-M v2.5.5: dude I wasted gratuitous amounts of time because the glass sheet thickness is apparently not an important factor
[FLC] Poststalk: I'm laughing so hard now
J-M v2.5.5: remind me to kill you some day
[FLC] Poststalk: sig'd
[FLC] Poststalk: oh man, I'm tempted to put that chat log in the lol-a-thon
J-M v2.5.5: w/e dawg
J-M v2.5.5: at least people can see I know my maths >_>
