Alright i have got this new shiny computer, i remembered MSC with heart and redownloaded it, and little did i know, there is an update! i get that aswell, then i install half life 1, started it, installed msc, then the patch, ran msc....then nothing, when i start MSC it stops on the wallpaper of the main menu, theres no music, and no menu, im getting really mad at this, i've tried reinstalling and yet nothing, so im looking to the community to help me out, cause i know you guys will have useful information.
MSC starts wrong.

But do you have Half-Life 1, and Steam, installed?

did you install the most current drivers for your gfx card and sound? the ones on the driver cd's can be a bit outdated and buggy.
If you have steam + hl installed, it should work... If its not, try doing it all over again, and before you install the mod, play half life once and configure things the way you want to, also i'm not sure if this helps or not but it's worth trying.

Should just have to start the training room, that should ensure the GCF downloads.
Only other thing I can think of, for that sort of behavior, is to delete the steam\ClientRegistry.blob - sometimes it fubars, and when it does, it leads to title-screen only and things along those lines. Also, of course, reinstall video drivers (to ensure full OpenGL support - or as close to full as your OS will allow), and reboot.

He only mentioned starting HL. Just making sure he actually loaded Training instead of just going to the main menu and quitting.

I have also got this problem, when i try to start the game i get stuck 0-7 times on the menu screen without any menues, and i get a error box telling me it stoped working. Gets really annoying, so far it has happend 7 times in a row befor starting properly.
This problem started happening when bloom got added to the game, also my graphic card seems to make some wierd noice when bloom is toogled on.(i heard someone else also had this wierd thing happening). I neaver use that shit anyways just being annoying.

Add ms_bloom_level 0 to the config.cfg. :\ (Then set it in advanced options to make sure it sticks.)
Graphics card making weird noise is probably the fan spinning up to full blast, though it should do the same for any other graphics intensive game. (Though, on most Win7/Vista systems, the fan kicks to full blow as soon as the OS starts up.)

Alright, so i know its been along time. but i got caught up doing stuff for a while, but now i am back.
So i have defragged, updated drivers, all that, but it's still not working, i am also having a somewhat similar problem with another mod. The specialists, when ever i join a server on there, the mod freezes on precaching resources.
i fear i may not get to play MSC ever again, unless its my Geforce graphics card doing all this.
i am guessing this is the greatest bump in the world. apologies.

I have had similiar issues like that on counter strike around 6 years ago or more (when i still played it). Game kept freezing on precaching resources and i was using a different computer, it usually worked if i tried many times to connect to a server but then again i dont know how to fix that issue.
Btw, have you ever tried launching both mods from library list or using the global server list thingie? Maybe you will get different results if you try both... You can also try reinstalling everything again (steam + games), see if there is any changes from previous tries.
Last tip i can give you is: go check steampowered forums, search threads related to the same issue, you might find a solution.

well after minutes of HARD hard thinking, i remembered a problem with minecraft crashing on far render distance, so, i dug into my steam folder, steam apps, found Half life 1 folder, opened it up, and set both HL applications to be compatible with windows 7. Now it works! and plus, all my HL1 mods can go to my native res! everything is perfect. Thank you all for your help and support, this has been a learning experience for a computer noob like me.zeus9860 said:

Hrmmm... What version of Windows is that? I've not used my Win7 install in quite awhile, but please don't tell me it has a compatibility mode switch for - itself. ><

I'm running Windows 7 and I've never had to configure hl.exe.
There is actually a Windows 7 compatibility mode but I don't need to use it.

Yeah, you right click the 2 HL1 appliactions in the steam folder, goto props, then goto compatibility then check off "Run this in compatibility with" and select windows 7. thats what i did.
Most computers do this automaticly, mine didn't so i had to do it manually, this fixed ALOT of problems like: fixing the mod to start up properly, and made HLs res to go to my native unlike it did before..
