Deus Ex is an RPG by Ion Storm made in 2000 using the UT99 graphical engine. It's got a cult following, for good reason. It's an FPS/RPG hybrid, which all of us MSCers love, and it a f*ckin' blast!
Despite it's age, the game feels immersive. I don't know, it must be the voice acting, all the characters feel real and like they're alive. I actually felt sorry for a bum who was down with the plague and his pleas to kill him (I shot him, by the way >_>). I also got a soft spot for the fellow employees at my organization ingame, from the guy at the desk to the philosophy-discussing sergeant, to Shannon, who I like to peep at in the women's restroom.
Killing certain characters in different times in the game will also cause changes to how you play the game. For instance, killing/incapacitating an ally/villain right when you meet them, for instance, will prevent them showing up later to aid/hinder you. This has a huge impact on how the game is played; killing someone when they seem like a neutral can save you from taking them on in a troublesome boss battle.
Not to mention the interface is great. It's an FPS/RPG hybrid, and guns can have their accuracy, recoil, and clip size modified, along with scopes and laser sights. Nano-augmentations can be placed in your body to allow super speed, super strength, spy drones, oxygen synthesizers, etc. You also have experience system too; for instance, I'm a stealth/thief-based guy...I've hoarded my skill points into pistol and melee weapn handling, along with being very strong in hacking, lock picking, and bypassing electronics. All of this makes you...mold your character to your preference. Not in the MMO sense, but you feel like you are creating your character's persona.
The SP game is LONG. VERY LONG. The plot is very addictive, and I've burned about 10-15 hours (maybe more) on the game, and I STILL don't think I've finished half of it. The plot twists are fantastic and all the places seem so vast. Replayability is amazing...it's easy to play the game again, since you most definitely will not find or access every place in the game in your first time! There are also three different endings!
There's possibly only one or two downsides to Deus Ex. The multiplayer isn't so great, but it can be fun if people don't lag the server with gas nades. Not to mention there are some pretty tough parts in Deus Ex and it will suck you in...it's hard going back to MS:C and RO after playing my share of DX...I'm only taking a break cuz I can't find out where to go next at the moment
Whew. Now time to get some actual work done. =_=
