Yeah I like that idea too, the choosing to attack or parry thing... I think you want to be able to choose to parry, but I think that there should just be a high parry chance when you aren't attacking.

Lawl, Idea just came to mind that may have already been brought up.

Parrying costing stamina was that idea.

I suppose with a decent chance to parry when not attacking that there should be a benefit to raising your parry skill levels other than higher parry chance.

bah, too much. read it if you dare!

PARRYING WITH INCREASED SKILL
Starting out, your parries will mostly just reduce the damage done.

With raised parry levels there is could be higher chance to parry off all of the damage. Also while using shields this chance is increased.

And with high parry levels your character can have opportunity to counter the attack that you have parried. A counter-attack could have increased speed, damage, accuracy, or a combination of the three. The counter-attack if successful could stun the opponent for a very short time.

Counter-attacks will be manual, (you have to click when the chance appears or it'll be just like a normal "all damage parried".)

STAMINA
There would ofcourse be a stamina system in place. And ofcourse swinging a weapon would cost stamina(depending on the equipted weapon), and parrying a blow would cost stamina(depending on the equipted weapon, and the amount of damage parried).

Using a Shield could reduce the amount of stamina needed to parry along with increasing parry chances.

The amount of stamina needed per weapon swing will limit characters usage of weapons. (i.e. adventurer has enough strength to pickup a long sword, but when he swings it he becomes exhausted.)

Counter-attacks can also put "the hurt" on the enemies stamina as the initial strike drops a chunk and while they are stunned, no stamina is regened.

What I'm suggesting is that when you run out of stamina probably from swinging your weapon when you have such little stamina that you cannot swing again when you have no stamina. If the enemy strikes you when you have no stamina you will be forced to parry with not enough stamina, and will be knocked "off balance". You will be unable to parry you will attack at a sluggish pace, your attacks will be more innaccurate, and you will do less damage for an amount of time dependant on your stamina while your character catches his breath.

HelooOO! Stamina potions! :D

ONEHANDED OR TWOHANDED?
It is easier to swing something with both hands and consequently it will cost less stamina. Holding a weapon with both hands will probably increase the damage and the speed(dependant on the weapon type).

However the sacrifice you make by lets say holding a long sword in two hands is that you don't have a shield to increase your parrying ability.
You will be able to parry, but it will cost more stamina, and you may not be able to deflect the full damage a lot of the time.

If this long sword was held in one hand instead combined with a shield, your offensive abilities will decrease. But with a shield you will be able to defend much easier. The long sword will take more stamina to swing, will be swung slower, and will be less accurate as well as less deadly.

Yeah, sounds gay to get knocked off balance, but not if you can do the same to your enemies!

Humanoid or at least enemies that will try to parry your blows will have stamina pools as well and can be off-balanced and/or overwhelmed.

A new strategic element is added where you can choose to be conservative with your stamina and attack or parry accordingly... OR
you can choose to press your attack and try to wear down your enemy's defences and comepletely wail on them.

The number of players vs. monsters in a battle will drastically affect the outcome of a fight, as along with hp, and damage ratio, the players and the monster's stamina pools will also be measured against one another.

Heres my great example that comes to mind:

One relatively low levelled player trys to fight a single orc warrior. He and the orc exchange blows, and he makes a few parries, but the attacks he does parry put a heavy drain on his stamina pool. within a short he starts taking some damage and is pzowned.

next time...

This single player brings two other friends with him to fight an orc warrior.
His friends surround the orc warrior and overwhelm him. The orc can only parry one of his adversaries at a time so he takes direct health damage from behind from one of the players. The orc is lucky and counter-attacks the player he parries. The counter-attacked player retreats due to the damage he recieved but his buddy is still attacking the orc and upon the next parried blow the orc is knocked off balance. The hurt player jumps back into the fray and the orc is pzowned.

ONE MORE AND I'M DONE! PROMISE!
"Combo" attacks
Some weapons will have combo attacks, a flurry of fast attacks with low-moderate damage. For the faster weapons like knives the combo will be their secondary charge up attack, many hits with low damage. Swords combo attacks will be slower but have moderate damage and less hits. "Combos, sounds good." Well the disadvantage to combos is that if you are struck while doing them, you, well.... STOP and get what would be an "offbalance" stun status but you keep all of your current stamina points :D So as soon as you recover you are still fighting.

-Final blow of a combo will be stronger than the others.

-Combos can wear down your opponents stamina quickly(if they are parrying your attacks) but requires a lot of yours.

-High skill levels will allow your character to do combo attacks with weapons, costing less stamina at higher skill levels.

-different/better weapons, different/better combos

Special attacks
Some of the axes and the larger swords will have a sweep attack that hits many adjacent enemies. The secondary mace charge will ofcourse be the stun that we know today but will be the full stop stun however will not be 100% if the attack connects.

-Special attacks take more stamina than normal attacks.

-High skill levels are required to do the secondary charges, primare and secondary charges cost less stamina at higher skill levels.

-different/better weapons, different/better special attacks

ENEMIES WILL DO SPECIAL ATTACKS TO YOU!
beware of idle enemies during combat...

ohhh the strategy! how many players will you have wearing down the enemy while the others ready their devastating combos and charges?

k, done.
