So one of my friends is hosting a CS server and we tried setting up a content server that would allow faster downloading. I remember reading somewhere that you could Bzip2 them (as in "map1.bsp" --> "map1.bsp.bz2") allowing even faster downloading. So I found a free host (http://www.fasthoster.info) and started uploading the .bz2 files. I set up a filetree ("cstrike/maps", "cstrike/sound" and so on) and set sv_allowdownload to 1 and sv_downloadurl to "http://rygeskuret.fasthoster.info/cstrike/" (which is the url) however it doesn't seem to work. I tried downloading one of the files manually via my internet browser but instead of opening the download-file dialog, it went into a new page, filled with non-readable text.

I can think of three things which could be my problem.
1) The hosting services is sh*t.
2) .bz2 files only work with Source Engine.
3) I missed something somewhere.

Any ideas?

I vote #2, possibly #3. I'd have to see the var, and your site's directory structure.

PS. Where's that Felewyn ring quest?

I'm getting to it, but we're having exams this week (and next week too) so I'm a 'lil busy. Also, the cause of the problem turned out to be #2.

My information.
Just in-case, be sure that the sv_downloadurl command is at the top of the server.cfg file. I remember having such an issue myself, long ago (although with a different host). ^^
