I fixed it!
Basically this was the issue:
In case that image isn't clear enough: there's a tiny (unreachable) crawlspace between the func_wall entities that compose the detailed ground (shown as the red squiggly line) and the worldbrushes below it that seal the map (shown as black lines). I textured the worldbrushes below the func_wall entities in NULL so that they don't get rendered. They don't have to get rendered because you can't see them anyway.
Texturing them in an actual texture (waste of patches because they aren't visible, but oh well) solved the problem.
