So this is a short but sweet map I've been designing for the new players to the mod. It's going to teach them the basics which they need to learn in order to have a successful start and at the same time get them (hopefully) excited to get into the game and start their own character.

I'll be updating this thread every so often as I come closer to finishing the map.

PS: Here's a Hammer shot to keep you all satisfied

Thothie, is it possible to have have that special 'help' console command to show the sprites in the map? I want to place them at the end but don't want them showing all the time (there will be a game_text to tell them they can make the signs appear for reviewing purposes).

The console/chat help command fires the map event help_spr - so just setup entities to respond to that accordingly.

@Thothie, expect a PM from me shortly regarding scripts which will be needed for this map.

@Everyone else, expect me to start making normal maps after this one is completed.

if this is going to be a tutorial map how comes it is so dark? on the screenshots it's allmost all black. okay if there is one part that is dark where you learn to use glow or torch or something. but whole map dark?
looks more like some dungeon map.

I can never see any of Dridje's screenshots - in my experience, it's just that he has a very bright monitor and/or strange gamma settings. It probably isn't actually that dark - although I've not compiled the source he gave me yet.

What's wrong with the in-game messages? I'll need more information before I can 'fix' them.

@ Lighting issue: I have no idea what you're talking about. In-game I can see every area perfectly. It's probably imageshack.us with the white backgrounds that is giving the illusion that it's dark.

What settings do you guys usually have for the game and your moniter?

I keep forgetting you are ESL, but travel is a verb, thus one does not "get travel". I think you want either, "I'll need to use a torch to travel down this passage." or "I'll need to get a torch to travel down this passage."

Either that, or you've just been using the +getuse bind too much. ;)

No... I have to paste the images in to Irfanview, set them full screen, and triple the gamma before I can see them. This has always been the case with screenshots you post, but the maps are never nearly so dark.

It may also be a European PAL standard type thang (IDK) - as I seem to have the same issue with some other folks who post screenshots from Half-Life, and I think they are all folks from Europe.

I use the default game gamma settings (which are pretty bright: brightness 2.0, gamma 3.0). I don't usually use my monitor's ICM profile, nor adjust the default overlay settings, save for on the TV output.

Okies - I compiled it... Screenshots for the blind Americans:
tutorial1.jpg

Okay, this first area is just plain dark.

tutorial2.jpg

*sizzle* *pop* That's better... Kinda cruel to make someone you assume can't figure out how to use a torch go through two pitch black tunnels, and break two additional walls, with no indication that they are breakable - not that he could see the indications anyways... Or is this where you want the ally to give you a torch and explain its usage?

tutorial3.jpg

WTF is there a playerclip here?

tutorial4.jpg

Gets brighter...

tutorial5.jpg

Das Armories.

tutorial6.jpg

So, if you jump off the wrong side here, yer just stuck?

tutorial7.jpg

Tis about as far as I got.

Or is this where you want the ally to give you a torch and explain its usage? Well I'm still trying to work on lighting and it looked fine with my gamma/brightness level but I'll change it then. You are right on the torch giving ally, that's where I want him.

WTF is there a playerclip here?
Player's don't go that way. Fire = Bad

Gets brighter...
Again, working on lighting still.

So, if you jump off the wrong side here, yer just stuck?
Going to fix that before final compile.

Tis about as far as I got.
If you look at the source you'll see where to go.

As you can see the map still needs a little work and I'll be able to finish it by this month hopefully. Also about the whole ESL thing....WTF! I make one little mistake and I get labeled as a foreigner. >.>

- Not the fire, but the picture above it - where the ropes are. I all started towards the rope and was stopped by invisible wall o force.
tutorial_hammah.jpg

Also not sure if it be a good idea to make func_walls with AAA textures to make them invisible - might cause alloc or dynlight error - likely better off with NULL (or better still, eff the entity and use a clip texture like ye did before).

Oh, sorry... Yer Canadianese aren't you? Got it in my head you were one of the Swedes we have for some reason (maybe the name) - and seemed the sort of mistake some of my Asian ESL friends would make.

Oh the rope area, I just wanted the players to run around the top for experience with the movement keys and eventually use a ladder (like most tutorial games these days). That can be changed if necessary. As for the aaa trigger wall, I'll change that with a clip texture the next time I load the editor up.

It's not intuitive - but if you put a railing there, maybe it would be.

I like to assume that folks downloading Half-life mods can handle basic FPS movement - but it might be nice to have a jump spot (with return teleport instead of pit-o-death) that explains the double-tap run thang and Stamina.

What i meant was this:

J-M v2.5.5 said:

this: "The door is locked, maybe i can find the key somewhere [near here]" change the [] part with nearby, sounds better.

And i also noticed this message: "I wonder what's down here" in the image's case your up there, so i think you should change here to there or make the message appear when you are actually down there with that text you have xD

I'm just saying this because i know it would sound better when reading those pop up messages when walking around the map. Anyways it's nothing so big.

Somewhere over the rainbow.
I would rather you stray from taking advice like this from Zeus, as I have a hard time reading most of his posts without (no offense) hating foreignese Englais.
