Introduction to Electrodynamics, 3rd edition, by David J. Griffiths:

Introduction to Electrodynamics said:
The subject of electrodynamics is plagued by competing systems of units, which sometimes
render it difficult for physicists to communicate with one another. The problem is far worse
than in mechanics, where Neanderthals still speak of pounds and feet

Damnit, man... Euro-dicks like that are the whole reason we have to deal with the Tea Baggers on this side of the bloody pond! ><

Unit system is superior, lets bring final solution to pounds and feet.

Seriously, metric system FTW.

If physicists can't convert between two unit standards with relative ease (especially when they have access to computers and interwebs) then we are all boned.

You have to understand, there's some cultural reasons my country refuses to adopt the metric system, outside of the 9mm bullet, which we have a particular fondness for.

Personally, I miss the Cubit... And the League.

Yeah, now that's a real man's measurement system!

Also, I hereby declare that from this day forth, all temperature measurements must be in Kelvin... Eff these temperature systems based on the boiling and freezing of water- hell, that changes with altitude, and how often do you come across pure water? Besides, those wusses who can't take the cold will feel so much better when you tell them it's 273.15 degrees outside.

edit:
Last time we were learning about Kelvin, it was before the 13th CGPM, so it was still "degree Kelvin" (°K). ;)

>_>

If what the geneologists on both sides of my family say is true, I'm so white I could burn crosses on the Grand Dragon's lawn.

As I'm Unitarian, however, I'm more likely to burn a question mark.

...also I suck at physics... Or haven't you noticed while playing MSC?

Kelvin is absolute, so it technically should not be referred in degrees.

Last time we were learning about Kelvin, it was before the 13th CGPM went mainstream, so it was still "degree Kelvin" (°K). ;)

I refuse to acknoweledge the 13th CGPM, as they were a bunch of smartasses. :p

Fortunately I found something else to rail on, after Sabre stole the "degrees Kelvin is wrong" thing.

Correct:
kelvin
K
degree Kelvin (if you live in the previous millennium)
°K (if you live in the previous millennium)

Incorrect:
Kelvin
k
degree kelvin
°k

The unit symbol is almost always uppercase, while the unit name almost always starts with a lowercase letter. Examples:
N for newton (not Newton)
J for joule (not Joule)
A for ampere (not Ampere)
V for volt (not Volt)
H for henry (not Henry)
T for tesla (not Tesla)
Wb for weber (not Weber)
C for coulomb (not Coulomb)
[list goes on]

I reserve the Right to capitalize for Emphasis and to capitalize all Technical Terms, as did my Old English ancestors! ;)

Although I do recognize the need to avoid certain conundrums that can be caused by this, such as, "I helped my uncle Jack off a horse." vs. "I helped my uncle jack off a horse.", I shall nonetheless continue to hide from the Grammar Nazis, Anne Frank style.

...but, needless to say, within these forums, we've now managed to achieve a level of Grammar Nazi war crimes near worthy of a Nuremburg trial. >_>
