Took my turn at trying to make a playable map...

made a box and hollowed it out.. (i know your not spost to just need to get something to work)
put in the two neccesary spawn begin and spawn start
i "think" i got the compileing down right

BUT.... when i go to play the map... it loads up fine.. i pick the character..... and all i get is a big black screen that smears my hands all over the screen if i attack... kinda like being spawned into a wall...

any help you could offer would be great...

*EDIT*
Gah, made the most basic map possible (hollowed out box... with box inside of it to spawn onto...) and apparently i have a leak! i just dont understand.. pic comeing asap..

Error:
A LEAK is a hole in the map, where the inside of it is exposed to the
(unwanted) outside region. The entity listed in the error is just a helpful
indication of where the beginning of the leak pointfile starts, so the
beginning of the line can be quickly found and traced to until reaching the
outside. Unless this entity is accidentally on the outside of the map, it
probably should not be deleted. Some complex rotating objects entities need
their origins outside the map. To deal with these, just enclose the origin
brush with a solid world brush

when you compile it do you have vis and rad run?

If so I suggest getting a light entity in that dark box of yours.

i think i've recently narrowed it down to a leak.. but how can i have a leak if i hollowed the box out and never created anything outside of it?

1 hollowed out box

I r guessing you moved or scaled the hollowed box. Moving or scaling hollows often causes leaks, this is one of the many reasons why YOU DO NOT USE HOLLOW - delete the box, redraw the walls. Also zoom out make sure you didn't accidentally scatter something about.

Further !xxx textures do not block vis. Use a texture that isn't liquid, or place something behind it that does.

-Thou shall not hollow anything, ever
-Thou shall not carve anything, ever
-Thou shall not use cylinders without aligning every vertex to the grid
-Thou shall not scale spikes, and thou shall make sure each vertex of a spike aligns to the grid
-Thou shall not overlap brushes
-Thou shall not scale or rotate complex nor oddly shaped objects nor rooms nor hallways
-Thou shall not build a box around your map to avoid leaks (nor for any other reason)
-Thou shalt always snap to grid
-Thou shalt always align to a large grid (x16+) when not drawing details
-Thou shalt follow the omni-present law of KISS
