After throrough experimentation with a few other players, It think we've discovered something:
Central Server Saving/Loading has no delay, timer, doevents, or whatever it needs to let the system continue running. This causes the following problems:
- Major system lag whenever player joins / leaves (hangs up the rest of the HLDS - which often leads to it crashing)
- Major system lag during multi-player Rejuvinate (apparently, it tries to update the health status of all characters casting Rejuv - with the same no-wait all-out CPU thrashing)
- Char saves on map crash, similarly, causing map crash bugs.
This also goes to explain why we are getting these problems, and Lord K isn't.
Basically, there needs to be some change in the code that allows the HLDS to cycle while characters are saving and loading - hanging up the whole HLDS system is not working well.
As for why I can't connect to my own server, I'm not sure - but downgrading to dev_a fixed the problem completely. (Pisses me off, as I spent $20 on a new ethernet dapter for nuttin)
