Ya got lucky.

This isn't a Vista compatibility issue, this is a failure to follow instructions. ;) It also quite likely that your MSC is in the wrong folder.

It's gotta be the wrong folder, we've not had any issues with people getting it to install on Vista.

Vista issues come up with compatibility with Vista's faulty fake OpenGL layer, particularly with ATI cards, causing weirdness and crashes on start. In terms of installing and launching, however, this game’s as compatible with Vista as any other.

Possible issues are:

• Vista account not using the same account as your XP PC.
- This may also mean that your vista account does not have a license for HL1
• Steam not properly installed
- Use regedit, search for the key "ModInstallPath", if it does not exist, reinstall Steam
- If you just copied your Steam from your XP PC, you will have issues
• Insufficient number of babies sent to Gabe Newell
- Remember, he likes em fresh

Source is sadly no more Vista compatible than HL1, and is indeed, in many ways, less so. It requires additional services that Steam installs, has more conflicts with more drivers that often require special settings (especially audio), as such, any of these issues could affect your Source mods as well. Good luck with that.

Incase this hasn't been brought up before, I believe you also need to run half-life for a little while. It's happened multiple times where I installed a mod but it wouldn't show up or work correctly because I didn't run half-life first.

There's gotta be something up with your Steam install, as I've this thing installed on two seperate Vista laptops, in addition to my main rig's XP and Vista partitions. Does that registry entry I mentioned exist?

Ye can try creating a shortcut to HL1 on your deskstop, by going to your Steam "My Games" menu, right clicking on Half-Life, and using "Create Desktop Shortcut". Hit Windows_Key+M to minimize everything, right click on the resulting Half-Life shortcut, and add "-game msc" to the end of the target. If that doesn't work, I've no idea, as something is fundamentally wrong when you can add source mods but not HL1 mods. Source mods are much more notorious for having launch issues under Vista than HL1 mods are.

I get the lil memory error messages when loading maps, but if I hit ESC they just go away. Sometimes the game goes crazy and takes like 5 minutes to load a shop menu, but thats rare.

If im not hosting, there are no problems whatsoever. I was surprised to see how well this game works on Vista considering how much trouble it gave us on XP. That was minus about a years worth of patches though.

If you can patch the memory, I think you've got Vista covered.

Good job getting this far though.

(Vista home premuim BTW, I cleaned it up quite a bit, disabled lots of features and removed all manufacturer programs.)

Re: VISTA ISSUES *

I got this bug and I'm on Windows XP. I do, however, have a Sapphire Radeon x1950 pro which uses CCC, so that's probably the problem  .

Re: VISTA ISSUES *

im getting really tired of this:

SZ_GetSpace: overflow on netchan->message
WARNING: reliable overflow for Square
Dropped Square from server
Reason: Reliable channel overflowed

After about 10 seconds in game the whole program closes with this as the message.

I am running vista 64bit and usually dont have problems but for some reason now it wont stop.

take note i have latest graphic drivers,
did everything thothie suggested at the start of the post,
and tried reinstalling with fresh
