I'd like to gather those files together and stick em in download - suspect it'll involve some legality issues, so maybe I'll put it up on media fire or some such, rather than put RKS at risk. Need to know which specific files though.

Files in the <user_id>/half-life folder should override files in common or even in the GCF's... If they've reversed that, it'll cause all sorts of problems with all sorts of mods. (Although one problem I can think of that would cause, off hand, hasn't manifested itself in any of my installs - nor has this one.)

If you see a thread regarding this issue for another mod in another forum someplace, it might be useful to post a link here so we can bash our heads together. It'd also help any pleas to Valve, should we submit a collection of links complaining of the same issue.

I finally got MS:C to work but now I can't even select my character because everytime I move my mouse to the left to select my guy the cursor snaps back to the center of the screen. This is so frustrating, I have no idea what is causing this.

I have done complete re-installs of everything HL1 related.

Might there be a console command for selecting a character?

you might try opening your console and closing it.
I've played a bit "the specialists", another HL Mod, where mouse sense is very important - guess what, update fucked it up.
So when I (re)spawn in that mod, i can't move my mouse unless opening and closing my console once.

Might help with MS:C, have not tried it out yet.

I've worked up a fix (if you don't have your original installation) and it seems to work (according to Darkangel) but it gives a weird error.

Code:
Was not possible to locate point of entry of the procedure _RIB_Alloc_provider_handle@4 on the DLL (dynamic-link library) mss32.dll.

You get it when you start the game and when you join a server.

But anyways if you just press ok to get past the errors it works fine, here's the link:

EDIT: I found a fix for the mss32.dll problem, after you backup your folders, delete everything but your mod folders, and then install the patch and it should fully downgrade without any problems.

Dude, I fucking love you. Seriously, I've been driving myself crazy for the past few days trying to figure out some sort of miracle command to fix my fps/mouse problems. I'll take an error box on launch over a broke ass game any day.

Now I wonder how long till they go and break everything again.

Thanks again man!

Chrome seems to think HLold3.zip appears malicious. :/

Eset's not picking up anything on it though... Hrmm...

Also, I have no common/half-life folder in my install. Just the half-life.gcf and half-life engine.gcf in the folder above.

Wait a sec...

I had Half-Life updates disabled on my Laptop's copy... Unchecked, download "New more efficient version" - and yup... Sure enough, now I have this bug.

By the gods, they moved the installation folder from <user_id>/half-life to common/half-life! ><

That'll break every self-installer ever, including ours. :(

And yeah, now I have the mouse bug too... *sigh*
Although in my case, I can select characters fine, I just wind up staring at the ceiling...
...although I seem to get it back, temporarily, after I toggle my console... And wow, my FPS is like 30 tops.

I'll try to find a non-hacky way to fix this, but I suspect, in addition to the path changes, one of these DLL's is bunk.

Yeah with the new update my mouse is wacky in MSC unless I use m_rawinput "1", and even then anytime I close a menu the mouse gives out till you open/close the console.

I don't know why they changed the install folder either, now my different accounts can't have their own configs and such. It's so dumb.

Bloom also blows out completely to a white screen at any level.

They also added/removed a whole bunch of cvars in the default config.cfg's, like fps_override, gl_vsync, cl_mousegrab, etc. They also removed a bunch of start-up commands, like all -noforce options.

This reverted me back to how everything was running before. The file isn't malicious. I would recommend backing up your folders, though. Works great, just gotta ignore the first two errors on launch/connect. This version doesn't use any of the new beta cvars. (Obviously)
^This fix works, at least until Valve breaks it again.

Only issue I'm having now is my HLDS for MSC keeps telling me I need to close and update HLDS. I tried updating through the HLDSUpdaterTool and it say's everything is up to date. Yet I get the same message every start-up. Servers still work fine, they just won't show up on the Master Server list until we get them updated.
^I have no ideas for this one.

Yeah, I'm thinking Chrome is more wary about the server the file is on, rather than the file itself, scanned it every which way and cannot find anything wrong with it.

Aside from that error pop-up, that fix works for me. Bloom is working fine for me. Even got my FPS back to normal.

I suspect we only really need to replace one or two files though, and if I could figure out which those were (hopefully in a way that'll nix the mss32.dll error), I can maybe rig the installer to put those in... Since we're going to have to re-direct the installer to a new folder anyways.

edits: Actually, it looks like they thought of that at least - and changed the registry entry to point at the new folder, so I guess the installer will still work - still likely need to replace some files though.

Servers failing to show up in the browser list is hardly a new thing though - I dun think anyone who can actually play is relying on that POS. :/

Mine worked fine for me prior to the update. People just had to be in the server, they wouldn't show up if they were empty.

This is on the newest version of HL, they fixed the mouse problem but introduced a new one, the cursor just snaps back to the middle of the screen if you move it past a certain point, it happens during character selection, inventory, talking to an npc, ect.

If you're getting the VGUI camera lock after exiting a fullscreen VGUI panel, you can do various things such as type "centerview" in the console. I guess if your mod is VGUI heavy you'll have to record the user's view angles on the client and set them back after closing the VGUI as a hacky workaround.
We may has to do this - although I think the best I can do is maybe rig it to centerview after closing an inventory panel.

-nofbo as a launch option will fix a lot of the graphical errors that pop up, and gl_vsync 0 may fix performance issues.
Dunno if it'll help texture bleeds, but if it does, I think we might be able to add it to the listlib.gam file as a default param.

m_rawinput 1 makes the computer use high quality, low latency input. m_rawinput 0 makes cs mouse movement the way it was before the beta.
Not tried playing with this together with the current Half-Life, but may get you half way to normal.

So before I only had the mouse issues, where whenever I tried to pick my character the mouse would flip the fuck out, and go between create new and etc. (And the usual bugs)... However; now I'm having this issue where anytime I launch a HL game (Half Life itself, Counter Strike, etc.) it makes it to the title screen, then just like...tabs out... but the program disappears, and isn't in my task manager. No error, no nothing. It just closes. :oldcry: so yeah, can't launch Half Life

I know I always say this, but did anything crop up in your log_msdll.log / log_cldll.log files?

If you've been fuxing with your Half-Life files, I'd suggest deleting everything in the half-life root folder (not the subfolders, but the files), and the valve and platform folders, then verifying integrity to re-download. Some of the DLL's seem to be registered, so even if you don't fux with one, if it cross links with one you did, Steam pukes all over itself. Which, of course, makes it very hard to track down which DLL's are actually the problematic ones. *sigh*

Some of the half-life settings are also kept in the registry, so if you had some combination of files that resulted in a bogus registry configuration... Well... Lots of luck to you. Sometimes even uninstalling and re-installing won't reset them, or re-initiate them after you manually remove them. :\

Centerview seems to fix the view-goes-up-and-locks problem but it can't be bound to a key

It seems that deleting everything in your half-life folder (except for mods or important dll files that some mods need) and replacing it with my patch fixes the annoying mss32.dll problem.

Hrmmm... That's what I did, and I still get that bug... Meh, really need to narrow down the offending dll.

Ya know, if you've managed to rig up a combination that both fixes the mouse and fps issues, and doesn't bring up the mss32.dll error, zip that puppy up and upload it somewhere (the half-life root files, and the valve and platform folders should be enough). If I get the same results on both MSC systems here, I'm real tempted to say "fuck it", and integrate that build into a patch, as I can't trace the fubar DLL for the life of me, and I don't see Valve fixing this anytime soon. The legacy Half-Life department likely risks their jobs if they admit they've done anything wrong.
